Compassion Defeats Cruelty

by

Joseph

When they act out of cruelty, you act out of compassion. In spite of the hatred and cruelty running rampant, you press on doing what needs to be done.

Never lose sight of the reason why you share and feel and care. There are people whom are inspired by your actions and beliefs, and this stands as a bulwark against villainy and evil.

God sees your actions, and surely stands with you. You act because He gives to you the compassion and love which you bestow upon others. And nothing can ever take that away from you.

Workouts To Keep You Mentally Agile

Workouts To Keep You Mentally Agile
By Andy Gibson

The use-it-or-lose-it principle applies not only to the maintenance of muscular flexibility, but to the maintenance of a high level of intellectual performance as well. Just as physical exercise plays a crucial role in how your body stands up to age, how you exercise your mind while you're young greatly affects your mental and emotional shape later on.

Although much of the material on aging contains long lists of the ways mental capacity declines with age, experts are now questioning these "findings". Many of the studies on which they were based, it turns out, were drastically flawed. They didn't take into consideration that hidden illness, the side-effects of medications, a lower level of education to begin with or simply the greater familiarity of the younger groups with test-taking had put the older groups at a disadvantage. Their poorer performance, which had been chalked up to inevitable intellectual declines with age, was actually due to unfair comparison.

In addition, many declines in mental abilities that once seemed inevitable and permanent have now been shown to be reversible. For instance, reaction time, a measure of how quickly one translates thought into action, can be speeded up by practice and motivating reinforcement. The bottomline is that many abilities once thought to diminish in fact do so little or not at all. And some actually improve.

Late-life brain gains

Foremost among the faculties that bloom in later years in healthy people (those free of disease affecting the brain, such as stroke or Alzheimer's disease) is what psychologists call "crystallized intelligence," the ability to evaluate information in light of past experience in order to make decisions and solve problems - what we used to call "wisdom". We depend on it, for example, to understand newspaper editorials or to solve problems where there is no single "right" answer. Crystallized intelligence, says John Horn, a psychologist at the University of Denver who has done some of the principal research on it, keeps growing even through the sixties, the oldest age group he has tested.

By contrast, "fluid intelligence," the capacities involved in seeing novel relationships, as in learning chess, or mastering complex new procedures such as how to use a personal computer, peaks early in life, around the twenties, and declines gradually thereafter. But, says Dr. Horn, the main effect of this drop in fluid intelligence seems to be that it takes longer to learn how to do new tasks - not that we can't learn them. That is, we can compensate for the decline by simply taking more time to do things. Other mental capacities that seem to increase over time include "world knowledge", including facts (galaxies are part of star systems) and practical information (the best way to get a loan). Such knowledge is acquired during one's lifetime from both formal learning and day-to-day experience.

Studies have found that although the greatest increases in world knowledge occur before the age of 50, there is no decline thereafter. Even more important, however, is how well people use that knowledge. Here age pays: The older you get, researchers have found, the more efficiently you can draw on your storehouse of facts.

Your mental machinery

The biological basis for this continuing mental agility is that the brain itself seems to age well, at least in people who stay physically healthy. The old belief that with age the brain loses some vast, debilitating number of brain cells has proven to be a myth. Marian diamond, professor of physiology/anatomy at the University of California who tested the grain cell-loss theory, found there was indeed some loss, but the greatest amount occurred before adolescence, not in old age. After this initial marked loss, the rate throughout life was not significant.

Other research on brain functioning shows similar findings. One study conducted at the National Institute on Aging used new scanning techniques to measure the rate of metabolic activity of glucose, the brain's primary energy source, throughout the brain. When researchers compared brain activity in healthy men, age 21 to 83, they found no difference. The energy metabolism of old brains worked as effectively as young ones.

The facts, then, show that in healthy people, the mental machinery has no glaring defects in later life. But for it to work most efficiently in those years, what you do now can make all the difference:

  • Read, read, read. A German study of elderly people found that the verbal I.Q. scores of a better-educated group increased significantly when they were re-tested several years later, while the scores of a less-educated group actually dropped over the same period. A possible explanation: The well-educated people had a lifelong habit of reading. Fact: The more you use a mental faculty, the stronger it becomes. Point: Get in the habit of reading widely - newspapers, magazines, and books. Thrillers will do in a pinch, but more challenging reading matter will stretch your verbal intelligence more, especially if you look up new words instead of skipping over them. Other good bets: brain-teasers, cross-word puzzles, word games.

Another way to stretch your intellect is to become a lifelong student. Try evening courses, seminars or workshops in subjects that intrigue you. Doesn't matter if it's calligraphy or computers, as long as it's new to you.

  • Increase your circle of friends. In a large study on aging, Dr. Warner Schaie, Professor of human development in Pennsylvania University found that the people who fared best in their later years were those who had the most active social lives, inside and outside their immediate family circle. Staying socially involved is especially important for women, who, statistics show, are likely to outlive their husbands and find themselves alone in later life. A large circle of close friends can take up the slack, but such friends cannot be cultivated overnight. Since the dearest friends are often the old ones, it pays to stay in touch with people you feel most fond of, and to keep track of them.
  • Be flexible and open to new experiences. Dr. Schaie's study of close to 3,000 adults also found that those with a flexible attitude in their earlier years enjoyed the greatest mental well-being in later life.

What's the prescription for relaxing a rigid identity? First, don't typecast yourself. Keep to a minimum the number of labels you wear. You can acknowledge that you goofed on a do-it-yourself car repair without classifying yourself as "not mechanical".

The next step is to break unrewarding patterns you may already have fallen into. Of course, fixed attitudes and behaviours can be hard to dislodge. Their very familiarity can make them comfortable despite the consequences. What to do? You can begin to loosen up in a problem area of your life by trying new things in other, easier-to-change areas. Plunging into something new can help unjam your outlook generally. Take a new route to work. Re-arrange your bedroom. Novelty is gratifying in itself, but it also permits you to see yourself anew, proving you can step outside your habits while retaining your basic identity. Such experiments help increase flexibility in another way, by demonstrating that the anticipatory anxiety you have about taking new approaches is exaggerated and manageable.

  • Examine your own attitudes toward aging. "We each have an 'elder' within," says California psychologist/gerontologist Ken Dychtwald, "It is composed of the myths and beliefs we have about growing older. Many people never nourish themselves with positive images of aging." The result, he says, can be "psycho-sclerosis," hardening of the attitudes. It can be psychologically just as lethal as arteriosclerosis, he adds leading people to feel unprepared, angry or depressed when the reality of aging hits home. The antidote: finding a positive role model, someone you know (or know of) who is one of those marvelously vital people, living proof that you, too, can age well.
  • Set goals and go for them, now. Developing a plan of action, and achieving it, is one way to ensure contentment in later life. The data shows that people who have adapted well during their younger years adapt well later on. They key is to figure out, now, what you want and to develop the social and intellectual skills to get it. Then the older years will take care of themselves.

Backup for this advice comes from a study of intellectual performance in young and old adults conducted by Margie Lachman, a Brandeis University psychologist. She found that, in both groups, people's attitudes towards their own abilities were strongly tied to their scores. Young or old, those who had a sense of "self-efficacy" - the feeling that what happens to them is within their control and that they can do well at most things if they try - showed the greatest intellectual vigor.

This sense of self-efficacy is crucial in one's later years because it can counter defeatist attitudes that otherwise tend to become self-fulfilling prophecies. Where does this special brand of confidence come from? From repeated successes throughout life. Can-do attitudes are the result of a lifetime of experience.

Perhaps the best advice comes not from a researcher, not a gerontologist, but from a voice of experience. At 85, Kentuckian Nadine Stair set down these words in a prose poem called, "If I Could Live It Over... " "I'd dare to make more mistakes next time. I'd relax... I would take more chances... I would perhaps have more actual troubles, but I'd have fewer imaginary ones."

My firm belief is: "Finding a cause leads the way to find a cure". So, it is basically important to understand everything from its deepest core. And the best way to do so is: Keep on reading to develop and deepen your understanding on health and wellness at GrowTaller4IdiotsDS.com.

Getting Pregnant With The Help Of Infertility Medication

Getting Pregnant With The Help Of Infertility Medication
By Hannah Bajor

Two Secrets To More Effective Use Of Clomid And Getting Pregnant

Secrets to more effective use of Clomid and getting pregnant. Clomid is short for Clomiphene Citrate. Clomid is a commonly prescribed infertility tablet that is used for the treatment in some cases of infertility to help you in the process of getting pregnant.

Clomiphene Citrate is marketed in the United States by Aventis Laboratories as Clomid and by Serono Laboratories as Serophene.

Many primary care providers, GYN and GPs prescribe Clomid as a first line treatment to help you establish normal egg production when you are struggling with getting pregnant or suffering from infertility.

Other infertility medication used as part of the getting pregnant process is injectable medications, which cause the ovaries to produce several eggs at once. The purpose of taking Clomid infertility medication is to establish normal egg production where one or two eggs are only developed.

Once ovulation is established, there is no benefit to increasing the dosage further. Numerous studies show that if Clomid is going to work, pregnancy will usually occur during the first three months of infertility treatment. Taking Clomid beyond six months is not recommended.

I cannot stress enough the importance of undergoing a basic physical exam before you start taking Clomid as an infertility treatment.

Two secrets to more effective use of Clomid and getting pregnant are having these two critical infertility tests done before you start Clomid:

1. The male partner must have a semen analysis (sperm test) completed. If a poor semen analysis (sperm test) is identified then Clomid is not the drug of choice to use for getting pregnant.

2. The female partner must know if her fallopian tubes are opened. This can be assessed via a specialized X-Ray called a Hysterosalpingogram. If your tubes are blocked then the egg can not travel down the fallopian tube and the sperm cannot swim up to meet the egg.

Using Clomid with blocked tubes or low sperm count is a waste of time and money and your precious egg supply which may affect your future infertility treatment.

Failed Clomid infertility treatment normally means that it is now time to advance to the next level of infertility treatment.

What this next level of infertility treatment is for you to decide depending upon the underlying cause behind your infertility situation that is preventing you from getting pregnant.

Very month you fail to become pregnant using or not using infertility medication you are losing hundreds of immature eggs stored in your ovaries, so choose the best infertility specialist you can find to increase your chances of getting pregnant.

How to install hardwood floors

How to install hardwood floors

Installing hardwood flooring is very much like putting a puzzle together. There are three main installation methods. These are nail-down installation, glue-down installation, and floating installation. It is assumed that you have a level subfloor that is wood for nail-down installation. Glue-down and floating installations can usually be done on both wood and concrete subfloors, but it must be level also.

Nail-down installation

1. Remove any baseboards or shoe moldings. Baseboard is used to hide the gap that you must leave for expansion and contraction of wood. So, you will want to make sure your subfloor is clear to the walls in order to have a place to come back and install the base and shoe molding later. The standard gap between the flooring and the walls is 3/16" to 3/4" depending on your manufacturer and style of flooring.

2. Screw down any loose or squeaky boards and undercut any door jambs to allow for the wood to be installed underneath. A helpful tip is to use the backside of one of your boards to determine the height needed to be cut off of your door jambs.

3. Start laying out the first row. Try to run the boards perpendicular to your floor joists if possible. You will need to either pop a chalk line or stretch a line parallel to your first wall. Make sure and account at this point for any out of square issues in your room. Once you start running boards they will appear as straight as the first board. You usually would measure from one side of the wall to the other and adjust any discrepancies with this first row. Make sure and predrill your first row or two for nails and face nail them into joists if possible.

4. Dry fit the next 3 feet or so. Make sure you are pulling your strips or planks from three separate boxes randomly so that the natural graining of the wood will vary slightly. This way your installed floor will have a more uniform look. Now you can layout all your boards for 3 feet or so and make your length cuts accordingly.

5. Nail down the next rows. Use a flooring nailer to nail through the tongue of the board. These are usually available for rent at most tool rental outlets. Using a rubber mallet to shoot the nail through the tongue. Make sure you adjust the nailer so that it countersinks the boards. Keep alternating nailing and dry-fitting boards to assure a proper fit.

6. Nail around any obstacles in the floor such as cabinets or pipes/fixtures that come out of the subfloor. Make sure you leave the appropriate gap around any of these obstacles.

7. Face nail the last few rows when you come to the edge of the room.

8. Next install your transitions and base moldings. Make sure you allow for a gap inside your transition. Also, make sure that you do not nail down the transition or moldings to the wood floor. You will need to nail the base moldings into the wall and the transitions into the floor in a place where it will not come into contact with the wood. Sometimes it is helpful to add some construction adhesive to the bottom of the transitions as these are usually high traffic areas. Over time this will prevent squeaking.

Glue-down installation

2. If installing over a wood subfloor, screw down any loose or squeaky boards, Undercut any door jambs to allow for the wood to be installed underneath.

Glue down this first row.

5. Apply glue a foot or so out from the board and glue down the next few rows. Keep in mind the larger the room the less area away from your board you will be able to glue at a time. Make sure and keep some cleanup rags to try and keep the glue off the wood. Most manufacturers sell these as accessories. You can also use Acetone on a cotton or cheesecloth rag.

6. Glue around any obstacles in the floor such as cabinets or pipes/fixtures that come out of the subfloor. Make sure you leave the appropriate gap around any of these obstacles.

7. Glue down the last few rows when you come to the edge of the room.

8. Next install your transitions and base moldings. Make sure you allow for a gap inside your transition. Also, make sure that you do not glue down the transition or moldings to the wood floor. You will need to nail the base moldings into the wall and glue the transitions into the floor in a place where it will not come into contact with the wood using some construction adhesive to the bottom of the transitions.

Dog Training - Early Training Is Essential

Dog Training - Early Training Is Essential

By: Declan Tobin

Dogs are a fantastic edition to any family but like all youngsters they need training. If you do not train your puppy now it will take a serious amount of help from a training school to get him to be obedient later on. Puppies just like babies learn mostly in their early years and unfortunately will also pick up the bad habits also. Early attention will save you heartache later on and give you more quality time.

House Training:

Dogs have to go to the toilet, everybody has experienced a new puppy making a mess on the tiles or carpet, not a pleasant experience but one that allows you begin training. You should allow your dog out on regular intervals; he will learn that this is the time to go to the toilet. If he happens to go in the house let him know that this is wrong by using a familiar word such as "No" and put him in the yard for a few minutes. Do not hit your dog, by doing so you will only break his spirit and make him nervous of you and others. It can by very frustrating at times but words work better long term and hitting. Never ever put the dogs nose into his urine, so many people do this thinking it is a good way for the dog to learn his lesson but in actual fact all you are doing is burning the animals nose, this is equally as bad as hitting.

Furniture and your puppy:

Teething can be a bit of a nightmare but you can eliminate the damage caused by puppies to furniture in a number of different ways. Boredom is a common cause for dogs to get up to mischief. Make yourself available for about 20 minutes playtime per day (excluding walking). Playing ball in the yard is a great exercise for the dog and apart from exercise it bonds you and him together. Toys are ideal in the house and will occupy the dog, if there are no toys such as a chewy bone the dog will find other ways especially if you pop down for some shopping and leave him alone - the furniture will get it. Different types of sprays are available to spray on the furniture and can be very effective. Remember to change the toys around from time to time as the dog will become bored with the same toys month in month out.

Walking:

Starting your puppy on a lead can be comical. It will take some time for them to get used to being on the leash but once they do it will be no problem. A dog will try to pull you along as this is in their nature. Do not run with the dog as this is giving in and they will expect this all the time. Put the dog on a short leash (not to short) and it will discourage them from trying to dictate the pace. After a week or so both you and the dog will be at ease with one another on the walk. Remember to bring the doggy bag with you. Starting off expect the dog to be curious of other dogs and new surroundings. Do not drag him along on the lead as this is his time for enjoyment.

Feeding:

Your dog has a different intestinal setup to you. So many people feed their dogs the same type of food as they eat themselves along with the dog food. Obesity in animals is common place along with humans. Do not feed your dog chocolate or other sweet foods as this will only lead to bowl problems. Dog food is designed to give the dog all the nutrients he will need to live healthily. Dog treats are available; they do not need our junk food. Check with your local vet or seek advice online for the amount of food your dog should consume on a daily basis.

Dog Treats:

Dog treats should be used as an incentive for obedience. Training a dog can be hard work and patients are needed. Basic training such as the command to sit should be rewarded with a dog treat. The dog will begin to understand that this is a good behaviour move and will do it less reluctantly with time.

Remember dogs will obey you more lovingly if treated properly without hitting; simple words will work much better than smacking. Make time for your dog, leaving a dog out the back yard day and night is no life, do not get a dog into the house under pressure from children, it has to be a well thought out decision.

Evaluate Your Customer

Evaluate Your Customer

By: Jay Conners

When a customer walks into your office, don't sell them the first product that comes to mind. Sit them down and evaluate their needs, than sell them the products that meet their needs.

I once worked with a guy in the banking industry, who was one of the best at explaining the benefits and features of our products, the only problem was, he was spending so much of his time explaining, but never selling anything.

He never sold anything because he never took the time to get to know what his customer's needs were, therefore he was attempting to sell them things that they didn't really need.

Nobody will buy things that they don't need.

This is why it is so very important to evaluate your customer.

Start off by making your customer as comfortable as you possibly can, talk about non-business topics such as the weather, sports, or a current event.

Once you and your customer have built a good enough report, start to ask some questions so that you may evaluate your customer's needs.

You can begin by finding out why your customer came into see you in the first place. Find out what products they already have. Find out if they already deal with one of your competitors. If so, find out all you can about the products and services they have with your competitor, so that you may compare products and fee's. This is a perfect opportunity to let your customer know how much better your products and services are compared to your competitors.

Find out what it is they need and can afford, than sell them the products you believe to be ideal for their needs.

Once you have evaluated your customer, the chances of making a sale will be very good, because you will now be offering your customer something they need and can use, so they will most likely buy it.

The last thing a customer wants to hear about, is a bunch of stuff they don't need. They have a reason for coming into see you, so find out what that reason is and do all you can to satisfy their needs.

Don't waste your time trying to push off all of your products on them at once. This time can be better spent evaluating them.

Get to know your customer, evaluate their needs, than meet their needs with the appropriate products.

By evaluating your customer before you sell, you will find that the sales process will come much easier to you. Good luck.

Of Great Worth

by

Joseph

You are of great worth. You are worth more than the most expensive jewel, or rare metal. You are more valuable than the stars in the sky or the trees or mountains.

Regardless of the evils of this world, the vicious attacks by the hateful and the wicked, your worth is ever great.

You are of great worth because you are unique. You are of great worth because you are you. Your compassion, hopefulness, and pleasantness are greater than the wickedness of this world.

You are of great worth. You are you.

But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear ; do not be frightened." 1 Peter 3:14

The Amazing Flaxseed And Diabetes Natural Treatment Connection Revealed

The Amazing Flaxseed And Diabetes Natural Treatment Connection Revealed
By Terry Robbins

A simple seed, but so many benefits. If flaxseed is not part of your diet, you are missing out whether you have diabetes or not. For diabetics, there is an amazing connection between flaxseed and diabetes for those looking for a natural cure (type 2 diabetes) or a way to manage blood sugar levels naturally.

The many health benefits of flaxseed

Before cotton became affordable, flax (Linum usitatissimum) also known as linseed, has a fibrous stem which was woven into cloth and is still used in this way today despite the prevalence of cotton, but the oil which was produced from the flaxseed has been used medicinally for thousands of years. It wasn't until about a thousand years ago that people started eating flaxseed for health and well being. The health benefits of flaxseed include but are not limited to;

1. Cancer

Flaxseed contains the most amount of lignans when compared to other plants. The amount of lignans in flaxseed is about 7 times more than that in its closest competitor (sesame seeds) and as much as 3,200 more than peanuts.

Lignans contain very powerful antioxidants which are crucial for preventing the damaging effects of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules that in order to stabilize or "heal" themselves, "steal" particles from healthy cells but this only ends up creating more free radicals. The effects of free radicals on the body are thought to increase the risk of developing various chronic diseases and conditions including cancer.

Lignans are particularly beneficial for reducing the risk of breast cancer. Estrogen which is the female hormone can stimulate the growth of cancer but lignans in addition to antioxidant benefits also contain phyto(plant)estrogens, which mimic the action of the estrogen produced by the body but are less potent.

These chemically weaker phytoestrogens bind to estrogen receptors in the body and this helps to stop the effects on the body of the much stronger estrogen produced by the body which allows excessive amounts of this much stronger estrogen to be eliminated from the body which helps to reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Studies have shown that women who consumed lignan reduced their risk of developing breast cancer by about 62 percent when compared to women who did not consume lignan.

Lignans are also beneficial for fighting against prostate cancer as has been shown in various research studies.

Other cancer fighting properties of flaxseed emanate from the polyunsaturated fats including omega-3 fatty acids as well as fiber that it contains. These compounds in addition to lignans help to promote health and well-being and reduce the risk of developing various diseases including cancer. The anti-inflammatory properties of flaxseed also help to protect against cancer and many other chronic diseases.

2. Heart attack

Lignans not only provide antioxidant benefits but as mentioned previously are also a rich source omega-3 fatty acids of which alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is the main type and ALA is able to lower the risk of suffering a fatal heart attack.

3. Cholesterol

Flaxseed is also able to lower the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol which is dangerous and can lead to heart disease. Flaxseed is rich in a type of soluble fiber that is beneficial for the body which is known as mucilage. This mucilage is tied to the cholesterol lowering properties of flaxseed.

4. Kidney disease

Research has shown that the lignans and omega-3 fatty acids contained in flaxseed are able to reverse the damage to the kidneys caused by lupus which is an autoimmune disease.

5. Hot flushes

The lignans or phytoestrogens contained in flaxseed can be beneficial for women dealing with the various symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes. The estrogen levels of women going through menopause usually start to decrease and instead of going through hormone therapy, phytoestrogens are a natural alternative as they can be used to replace some of this estrogen that is no longer produced by the body because estrogen can help to reduce the severity of hot flashes and phytoestrogens can help with this.

Flaxseed and diabetes

Soluble fiber galore

The connection between flaxseed and diabetes is related to the mucilage that was discussed previously which is the soluble fiber that is available in high amounts in flaxseed. This soluble fiber has been shown by various studies to be able to reduce blood sugar levels which is important to not only manage diabetes but to also cure it naturally.

Diabetes results when the body does not produce any or enough of the hormone insulin or the insulin produced becomes inefficient and/or ineffective (insulin resistance) leading to the accumulation of glucose or sugar in the blood. Insulin is supposed to remove this glucose from the blood and transfer it to the various cells in the body where it is used for fuel or energy for day to day activities.

When insulin is unable to perform its duties, this glucose accumulation in the blood can increase the risk of developing diabetes or leading to diabetes related complications (heart and kidney disease, limb amputations, diabetic coma, etc).

One aspect of managing diabetes naturally is by following a customized diabetic diet to help control the amount of glucose deposited into the blood.

This is what is so amazing about flaxseed and why it is so important for diabetes natural treatment. The soluble fiber in flaxseed helps to slow down digestion which means that the digestion of the carbs and sugars in the food that we eat and conversion of this into glucose to be deposited into the bloodstream will be slowed down which helps to prevent blood sugar spikes. This shows the importance of flaxseed for diabetes natural treatment.

If you are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, one of the ways of preventing you from developing type 2 diabetes is to increase your intake of this soluble fiber.

Weight loss

Another connection between flaxseed and diabetes is weight loss. Many people with diabetes especially those with type 2 diabetes are overweight. Getting your weight under control is an important aspect of natural diabetes treatment and this is another area that flaxseed can help.

In addition to soluble fiber, flaxseed also contains insoluble fiber (roughage). Both types of fiber are important for weight loss because they help you feel fuller faster and keep hunger pangs away for longer which can help you eat less and help with your weight loss goals. Overweight diabetics who are attempting to lose weight should always increase their fiber intake for the reasons discussed and flaxseed can help with this.

It is also important to remember that many people with type 2 diabetes also deal with high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, etc, and as discussed previously, flaxseed can also help with these various health issues.

The connection shown above between flaxseed and diabetes makes this amazing seed crucial and an important part of any diabetic diet.

Getting the most

1. Flaxseed oil and diabetes

Flaxseed oil is produced from the seeds and many people skip out on the seeds and reach for the oil but you may want to think again. You may want to consider passing by the oil firstly because you will not get the all important fiber and secondly because while the oil may contain some health properties, most of the lignans, protein and minerals are found in the actual seeds and not the oil. Since you need fiber as a diabetic, pass on the oil and reach for the seeds instead.

Flaxseed oil is also easily perishable and must be stored in the refrigerator once opened.

2. Must be processed

Flaxseed is available in two varieties i.e. brown flax and golden flax (also known as yellow flax) which generally have similar nutritional compositions.

While some people love to sprinkle whole flaxseed on salads or fresh baked bread, the body cannot process whole flaxseeds. They will simply pass through the body undigested which means that you will not get the full benefits of flaxseed including soluble fiber.

Flaxseed must be processed but the ground flaxseed goes rancid very quickly so store it in the fridge but do not use after 30 days or so. While you can easily find ground flaxseed in grocery stores, it is not as fresh as freshly ground flaxseeds so think about getting a cheap spice or coffee grinder or other seed grinding tool so that you can grind two tablespoons or more of whole flaxseed and have it fresh to use each day to add to smoothies, oatmeal, sprinkled on hot or cold cereal, sprinkled on salads, etc.

While ground flaxseed (flaxseed meal) does not last more than 30 days or so when stored in the refrigerator, whole flaxseed can last 6 to 12 months or 1 to 2 years if stored in the refrigerator.

Safety precautions

Flaxseed is generally safe but it does contain a minute amount of cyanide which is not enough to harm an adult but could possibly harm a fetus or infant so avoid flaxseed if you are pregnant or nursing and do not give it to children under the age of two.

The minute amount of cyanide in flaxseed should not be harmful to most people if you only consume the recommended daily amount which is 2 to 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed. It is also important to remember that there are usually very small amounts of cyanide that are constantly present in human tissue which are constantly being metabolized so the cyanide in flaxseed should not really be a cause for concern. Other plants such as cruciferous vegetables also contain small amounts of cyanide.

A tablespoon of flaxseed contains about 5 to 6 milligrams of cyanide but for cyanide to be dangerous to the human body, it would have to be in amounts of at least 1,000 milligrams.

Other precautions with flaxseed relate to allergic reactions. Some people may be allergic to flaxseed and if so, stop using it or reduce the dose.

Some people may also experience bloating and flatulence when they first start consuming flaxseed. If so, start with small amounts and gradually build up.
