It's really not that difficult to make great tasting Chicken and Noodle Soup. Really! With the convenience of using a supermarket roasted chicken, you can get incredible flavor without starting from scratch.

When I started testing recipes, I looked through all my conventional cookbooks, gourmet cookbooks, online, etc. All the recipes I found seemed to lack the flavor I was looking for - you know, that great 'chickeny' depth of homemade chicken soup? So, I started looking in those cookbooks from churches and women's organizations.

Although I didn't find the exact recipe there, I did have some thoughts that led to my current method. I use a noodle recipe from a very sweet lady who goes to my church, Delores Koster. Her soup recipe is in the St. Francis Xavier, Carbondale, Illinois Cookbook.

The struggle I was having lied in making the stock/broth/base for the soup. That's when I decided there had to be a better, easier, faster way to get the flavor I wanted without waiting for a whoe chicken, vegetables and some seasonings to figure out how to marry together appropriately.

One night after my daughter's basketball game, we stopped to get a rotisserie chicken and the grocery store for dinner. My family only likes the white meat, so we have part of the chicken left over. Rather than tossing it, because no one liked the dark meat, I froze the whole thing until I could figure out how to use up the remaining chicken.

My son had been asking for homemade chicken and noodles, and that's when I decided to give it a try. I added what was left of the rotisserie chicken into water with some vegetables and spices to make the base for the soup. After a couple of hours of simmering on the stove - and it smelled great - I strained the mixture and boned what was left of the chicken. Ironically, my kids don't really like a lot of chicken in their soup, so this idea works out great for us. And, for some reason, they eat the dark meat in this soup.

I add the noodles and let it simmer for at least an hour or two. Usually, I have towater prior to adding the noodles. The result is really good. It has become one of those meals that everyone looks forward to, and the kids always ask for when they don't feel well. I guess that's the true test of chicken soup, right? I hope you enjoy it, too!

By the way, feel free to add new carrots or whatever other kind of vegetables you would like to this soup. My kids prefer to have a bowl of steamed broccolli and cauliflower that they can dip in the broth, so I don't add anything but noodles to the strained broth for us.

Chicken Noodle Soup

1 Grocery Store Rotisserie Chicken - or the remaining part of one. (If you like a lot of chicken in your soup, you may want to add a chicken breast or two if not using a whole chicken)
1 Medium Onion, quartered
2 Stalks Celery, cut into 2 inch pieces
5 whole Peppercorns
1 T. Poultry Seasoning
1 T. Sea Salt

In a Dutch Oven, or large soup pot. Add all of the above ingredients except water. Pour enough water over to cover ingredients by 1 inch.

Bring to a boil, then turn down to a simmer and leave uncovered for at least 1 hour, but preferably 2. I like to start this first thing in the morning to have for lunch, or at noon for an early dinner.

With a slotted spook, or spider, strain chicken, bones, and vegetables out of pot. Put pot back on burner, and add about 3 cups of water.

Bone chicken, reserving meat for the soup. If you would like to add vegetables, especially carrots, do so now. If adding peas, you can wait until the last 10 minutes of total cooking time.


1 egg
3 egg yolks
Cold water
2 C. Flour
2 t. Salt

In a medium mixing bowl, add all eggs. Whisk until light. Add 3 tablespoons of cold water and salt and whisk until well blended.

Add flour and mix with a fork until you can gather it up in your hands and form a ball. Depending on the weather, I've had to ad a bit more water to bring it together; but, be careful not to add to much and make it sticky.

Let the dough sit for about 5 minutes. This is important because it allows the dough to be rolled out much easier, and less like elastic.

Flour the area where you will roll out the dough.

Roll out the dough into a large circle. I get it as thin as I can, about 1/8 inch, although some people like their noodles thicker. If you prefer them thick, you will need to add for time for cooking to make them tender.

Using a pizza cutter, cut the dough into noodles the desired width and length you prefer.

Put the noodles into the simmering broth and continue to simmer for at least 1/2 hour, but they are more tender if you have the time to let them simmer for an hour.

You can add the chicken about the last 15 minutes.

Taste for seasoning, because I usually need to add at least another teaspoon of salt at this point.

House training is one of the most important elements of creating a well trained dog and trusted family member. Problems with house training and similar issues are the number one reason that dogs are surrendered to shelters, so properly house training your dog can literally save his or her life.

House training a puppy does not need to be difficult, but it is important to take the process seriously, plan ahead and take things slowly. Some dogs will be easier to house break than others, so it important to work with your dog. Rushing the process can be counterproductive and cause you to have to start all over again.

When it comes to house training a new puppy, it is important to know what to expect. Unless the owner is able to supervise the puppy round the clock, it is difficult to complete the house training process until the dog is at least six months old. It is important to know this ahead of time so you can be prepared.

Young puppies have bodies that are constantly changing and growing, and puppies younger than six months often have not developed the bowel and bladder control they will need to be properly house trained.

When the owner is not at home, the puppy should be confined to a small room and the entire floor should be covered with paper. Of course it is important to puppy-proof the room, that is removing any items on which the puppy could be injured. In the beginning, the puppy will most likely eliminate anywhere within the room. In addition, the puppy will probably play with the papers, chew them, etc.

This is perfectly normal and should not be grounds for punishment or distress. Cleaning up each day should simply be part of the routine of living with a new puppy. Simply clean up the soiled papers and put down new ones each day.

Time for paper training
During the time that the puppy is confined in its little den, it will begin to develop the habit of eliminating on paper. After a little time has passed, the puppy will begin to exhibit a preferred place to eliminate. After this preferred spot has been established, the area that is papered should be slowly diminished.

The first papers to be removed should be those that are furthest away from the "toilet". Eventually, the owner will have to lay down only a few papers. If the puppy ever misses those papers, it means that the papered area has been reduced too much and too soon.

After the puppy is reliability doing its business only on the papers that have been left, the papers can be slowly and gradually moved to a location of your choice. The papers should be moved only gradually, as little as an inch a day. If the puppy misses the papers, again it means that they have been moved too soon and too far. In this case it will be necessary to go back a few steps and start over.

It is important not to become discouraged. The puppy will eventually understand the concept, and you will be able to choose your puppies toilet area and move on to the next step.

House training when the owner is home
Obviously the more time you can spend with your puppy the faster the house training will go. The objective should be to take the puppy to the toilet area every time he needs to do his business. In most cases this will be either every 45 minutes, right after each play session, after he first wakes up or right after he eats or drinks. It is important to provide effusive praise for the puppy when he eliminates in the established toilet area.

As the puppy becomes more used to using his toilet area, and as he develops improved bladder and bowel control, he will be able to begin spending more and more time outside his den with his owner in the rest of the home. It is important to begin this process by allowing the puppy access to one room at a time.

It is also important to allow the puppy in the extra room only when he can be supervised. When you must leave the room, be sure to put the puppy back in his den.

If you're a small independent business owner it could serve you well to take a birds eye view of your entire money making process for your business.

1. Looking at this year's activity and make sure you've identified your most profitable customer - profile the characteristics that help you identify similar customers in the marketplace so that you develop your message specifically to target the customers with the characteristics you've identified as those of your most profitable customer.

In my promotional products business I want relational customers vs. transactional customers. All of my marketing and sales efforts are designed to attract the client that is looking for a trustworthy, reliable promotional products distributor with great ideas. The customer that wants a cheap transaction with no loyalty on either side of the table is probably not my customer and I'm not offended when they don't want to buy from me. As I've been doing business over the last 15 years I've identified the transactional customer as a time waster for me. I end up doing a lot of research and servicing of an account with very little profit.

2. Establish or fine tune the marketing message to the prospect you've identified with your profile as most likely to be your most profitable customer. Look at everything you are doing, saying and printing about and for your business - Is your message clearly spoken to the target customer?

3. Identify the most effective activity to reach your prospects and schedule that activity so that it happens consistently. If you bring customers in by running ads in your local newspaper then schedule them for the entire year. You get a better rate if you contract for a years worth of advertising.

If the activity that brings you business is your weekly email newsletter then sit down and plan your editorial calendar for the year and begin to write the articles now. You can always edit or add to them before you send them out for those written far in advance. By using autoresponders you can schedule the email newsletter well in advance.

If the activity that builds your customer base is face to face selling then you need to be sure that you are calling on customers to schedule appointments. You should identify how many prospects you need to call to get appointments, and how many appointments you need to create sales for your product.

4. Understand your sales cycle. Whether or not you are running ads, sending email or scheduling appointments you need to understand what happens and how long it takes to finally close the sale. The rule of thumb is "the more costly the investment the longer the sales cycle." No matter what you sales cycle is you need to plan your most productive activity to steadily continue to draw in new prospects while you're finalizing sales for other customers.

I have a few small business owners who ask if they should take the time to do this kind of review of their business plan every year. YES, in fact, do a mini version of this every week to be sure that you're on track and making money consistently. Your income will be consistent if you've

  • Identified your customer
  • Established your most effective message
  • Identified the most productive activity
  • Understand your sales cycle

Take the time to do this review before the end of this year and give yourself the gift of more business next year.

Barbell Floor Press Challenge Supplemental




I did the barbell floor press in two other workouts last week, the exercises were at lower weights I was aiming for recreation.

Here are the exercise results:

I also did five sets of stationary dumbbell holds at 75 pounds (the max weight for the dumbbells) for 30 seconds a piece, five sets of horizontal cable rows at 190 pounds at six reps per set, and five sets of seated overhead presses at 120 pounds (140 is the max on the fixed weight machine) at six reps per set.

I also did five sets of the seated push press on machine at 150 pounds and six reps per set, five sets of horizontal cable rows at 210 pounds and six reps per set and three sets of bent over barbell rows at 155 pounds, 175 pounds and 185 pounds for ten reps per set.
When I get back to the gym I'll do the barbell floor press at 260x5x3. I'll keep you posted.

It is also likely that the sea angler will concentrate on catching one species of fish at a time, and this will vary according to the seasons. It might be cod, mackerel or herring, or even salmon, whiting or sea trout.

Angling is one of the oldest ways of finding food there is. Early man did it, and modern man only has the advantage of having better designed fishing tackle when all is said and done. The art of catching fish hasn't really changed very much over the centuries. Technology has perfected things to a large degree, but simply securing bait to a hook, attaching the hook to a line, tied to the end of a rod, is all you need at its most basic. With that alone, you will catch fish.

Fishing tackle can be purchased at any good angling outlet. Most of them are also online these days and will deliver most items across the country by mail or carrier. This has opened up this popular pastime for the enthusiast, as anyone can now spend time comparison shopping to get the best sea fishing tackle bargain. Some online fishing supplies stores are better than others, of course. You should choose one that has the necessary experience and knows what it is talking about. Ham is usually sold in one of three conditions:

1) Fully cooked
2) Partially cooked
3) Uncooked

Although the cooking techniques are similar, there are differences between a fully cooked and a partially cooked or uncooked ham. For example, a fully cooked ham should be cooked to an internal temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit, while a partially cooked or uncooked one should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

The instructions below are grouped into sections for fully cooked and partially or uncooked hams. --

Roasting or Baking--Fully Cooked

There are three basic types of fully cooked ham:

1) Wet cured or City Ham
2) Spiral sliced
3) Canned hams

Keep in mind that a fully cooked ham does not require cooking; it can be eaten as is. But cooking it can bring out the flavors of its own juices. The flavor can also be enhanced by adding other ingredients during the baking process. A fully cooked ham should be cooked to an internal temperature of 140 degrees.

Spiral Sliced Ham

This type is pre-seasoned and does not require cooking. However, if the ham is to be served warm place it in aluminum foil, cut side down and add approximately � cup of water. Wrap ham tightly in aluminum foil and cook at 275�-300�. Allow 10 to 14 minutes per pound cooking time. Ham may be removed from oven when internal temperature reaches 135�. Allow to sit in foil for a few minutes until the internal temperature reaches 140�.

Canned Ham

Place the ham in a shallow cooking pan, uncovered. Bake at 325�. Allow 15 to 20 minutes per pound cooking time.

Wet Cured (City) Ham

This ham may be cooked either covered or uncovered.


Trim any excess skin and fat. Do not trim off all the fat as that is what produces the juices and flavor. Place ham in a roasting pan, if cut, place cut side down. Cover with aluminum foil and bake at 325 degrees. Allow 15 to 18 minutes per pound for whole hams and 18 to 24 minutes per pound for half hams. Glazes, if used, should be applied during the last thirty minutes of cooking.


Follow directions for covered ham, except do not cover with foil. Use same cooking temperatures and times. Apply glaze in the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Roasting or Baking Partially Cooked or Uncooked Ham

These hams are defined as Dry-Cured (Country) ham or Wet-Cured (City) Ham types. Remember, regardless of the type, these hams should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160 degrees.

Dry-Cured (Country) Ham

These hams need to be washed and soaked for up to three days before cooking. Follow the label directions on the ham for washing and soaking instructions. This type of ham can be baked covered or uncovered.


After soaking, place it in a large roasting pan with 4 to 5 cups of water. If the ham has a skinless side and a side with skin, put it in the roasting pan skin side up.

Cover the ham with aluminum foil or a cover. Put the ham in a preheated 375 degree oven and increase oven temperature to 500� and cook at this setting for the first 10 minutes only. After 10 minutes, turn the oven off and allow the ham to set for three hours without opening the oven door. Turn the oven back on to 500� again for 15 minutes. This time, the ham needs to set in the oven, without the door being opened, for 6 to 8 hours. After setting, the internal temperature of the ham should be at least 160 degrees; if not, repeat the 500 degrees setting again for 15 minutes and check the ham after 1 to 2 hours. If desired, brush with glaze before serving.


After soaking, place the ham in a large roasting pan with 3 cups water. Do not cover. Put the ham in a preheated 325 degree oven and cook until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees. As a guide, a whole ham will need about 18 to 20 minutes and a half ham will need about 22 to 25 minutes cooking time per pound.

Wet-Cured (City) Ham

Use the same methods as the fully cooked wet cured hams, but remember to cook to an internal temperature of 160 degrees. Therefore, the cooking time will be a little longer than that for a fully cooked wet ham.

Ham Cooking Tips

  • Baking at lower temperatures but with increased times will result in richer flavored hams. Do not use temperatures below 200 degrees.
  • Do not pierce the ham once cooking begins-this allows beneficial juices and flavorings to escape.
  • When checking the internal temperature, avoid touching the bone with the thermometer as this can cause an incorrect reading.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 56% of Americans between the ages of 20 and 74 are overweight, and 30% of that figure are obese. Unfortunately, it has become the norm to be an overweight adult. This is mainly due to a physically inactive lifestyle and overeating. When people with Type 2 diabetes are looked at as a group, more than 80% are overweight. With just a little weight loss blood sugar levels may drop significantly.

Weight loss is not an easy thing considering our sedentary lifestyles but physical inactivity is easily fixed. Just stop making excuses, and start moving. If consistency is where you have fallen down, there are ways to develop a routine you are likely to keep. But it will be all for nothing if your motivation is not strong enough, to begin with.

Addressing overeating is simple in theory, but often tricky in practice. Unlike physical inactivity, there are many reasons why you may be overeating. On the surface, these reasons could include...

  • a poor diet or lifestyle, and/or
  • bad habits where a lack of instruction may be a factor.

Do not make things harder for yourself. You need to understand the reasons why your health is as it is. Talk to your doctor, and go over all the details regarding your weight, your blood sugar levels, and your overall health.

After a brief analysis or reflection, you will likely find the main reason you are overeating is due to a lack of appetite control. This is where you eat when you are not actually hungry, often out of habit.

The habit could be due to a combination of things. You might be eating because you have not had something to eat for a couple of hours. You may be used to several small meals, which contrary to popular opinion, is inferior to eating fewer, more satisfying portions. You might be eating because you are bored.

Essentially, if you are eating when you are not hungry, it is almost always going to cause you to overeat. It is your total consumption at the end of the day that matters.
