In order to eliminate or at least control stress, it is vital to know and understand the causes of stress. Of course, there are many causes of stress and they are as varied as the people who suffer from stress, but there are a few places to look first. And by learning about these causes of stress, you can figure out where stress is entering your life.

One of the most common, and most complained about, causes of stress is work. However, it is not only the day-to-day tasks and routine pressures of work that can lead to stress. In fact, the mere concern about keeping a job can be a source of stress. Unfortunately, the combined stress of both work itself and the possibility of losing it creates a sort of double-stress in which people feel they have to work even harder in order to keep their jobs, making the stress that much worse.

As well, for those who have not entered the working world yet, school can be a great source of stress. The constant pressure of schoolwork, friends, teachers, tests, quizzes, papers, and everything else can be enough to make anyone feel like they are in trapped in a vice. In addition, the deadlines are all immoveable, so students are constantly under time pressure. And, to make matters worse, there are often several deadlines overlapping each other, intensifying the demands on time. Then, once final exams arrive, there is a lot to re-learn and students need to spend so much time studying that they can barely sleep. Needless to say, losing sleep does not help people who are under stress. Thus, students need to manage stress just as much as people who work.

Another cause of stress is simple family life. Unfortunately, though we hope that our home lives can be sources of relief from daily stress, they can often be sources of stress all their own. For childen as well as parents and spouses, the home can often be its own source of pressure.

For parents, stress can often come from simply worrying about their children. After all, seeing a child grow up, make mistakes, go through school, go to college, play sports, and often learn things to hard way is enough to make a parent tear their hair out. Thus, despite the joy that children can bring, they can also be causes of stress and worry.

Unfortunately, parents can be causes of stress also. Though they often have their childrens' best interests in mind, they can also put a lot of pressure onto their children, causing them to worry not only about school or life, but also how their parents will react when they hear about some new event, success, or error. It is as though there is no place to turn when things go wrong, creating extra stress. No, it is not easy being a parent, but it isn't always easy being a child or a teenager either, since parents can often be causes of stress as much as sources of comfort from it.

On top of that, spouses can also be causes on stress. Let's face it, husbands and wives often have expectations of their significant others and it is not always easy to live up to those expectations. As well, spouses often spend a lot of time avoiding certain arguments simply because they are trying to avoid stress. However, leaving tension in the air while not resolving it can be a cause of stress.

Money is also a major cause of stress, simply for the fact that there never seems to be enough of it. Thus, as the money keeps going out but it never seems to come in enough, stress just keeps mounting. Unfortunately, spouses, children and sometimes parents can often remind us of our shortfalls and they will often increase the stress. Of course, that is to say nothing of the continual reminders from the mortgage or rent, car payments, credit cards and other bills. And, furthermore, it is rather difficult to be philosophical about money stress since attempting to put things into perspective only recalls thoughts about the money that always seems to be missing. Thus, money stress just keeps piling up higher and higher and there never seems to be a way out.

Though this is only a partial list of all the possible causes of stress, these are some of the most common sources. However, no matter where the problem is arising, stress will not make them better. Rather, stress will only make it harder for people to think about their problems and try to solve them. Thus, in order to solve the problems that lead to stress, the best place to start is by managing the stress, then working to solve the problems with a clear and uncluttered mind.

When people find out that I'm a music therapist, the comments I hear most often are "I wish I could sing!" or "Oh, I love to sing, but I'm not good enough to do it in front of anyone". Some of these people tell me that, as children, a parent, teacher or someone else told them that they should just mouth the words because they didn't have a good enough voice.

Singing is our birthright! Singing is a natural and pure expression of how glad we feel to be alive, and the way we show our love of music. Here are my top five reasons to sing out your stress:

1. To connect with your body: We sing with our whole bodies. Because singing is so connected to closely with breath, singing helps us "be in our bodies" and let go of the thinking (or worrying) we do much of the day. Singing can be a joyful activity and can release endorphins (those feel-good chemicals that the body creates).

2. To connect with yourself: Meditative toning, singing along to a favourite song or simply humming to yourself are all ways to tap into your inner landscape and see what's going on in there.

3. To connect with others: Singing with other people - in meditation, prayer, at a sing-along, at a concert, or even over the telephone or Internet - helps us experience in a very deep way that we are all truly connected.

4. To express your feelings: Many times a singer, songwriter or composer has expressed our feelings in a way we could never have - if there's a song that expresses what you want or need to say, try singing along (keep in mind that this is just for you and it's not about "sounding good").

5. To boost your good feelings: Whatever you focus on, you'll invite more of into your life. You can choose uplifting, joyful and celebratory songs to sing.

So sing out! Be proud of your own unique voice. Experiment with what works for you - keep a journal of what you notice in your mind and body when you sing specific songs. Then you can choose the right song for the right moment and make use of the power of singing in your own life.

There is no magic potion that will instantly give you back a full crop of thick, lush hair. But if we look at the way advances in hair loss treatments have evolved recently, perhaps we're not far from it.

Hair loss can be caused by many factors, the most common being Pattern Baldness which affects more then 40% of the male population. Women also suffer from hair loss, although the causes can be quite different than in men. Baldness can be quite a degrading condition for millions of men and women, and can lead to psychological problems and feelings of self worthlessness. But the scientific discoveries in recent years have made the treatments for balding more effective, and like all medical conditions, if you act on the problem when it is in it's infancy, you've got a better chance of minimizing the effects, or even reversing the condition.

The causes for hair loss are many and varied. Genetic 'Pattern Baldness' is the most common, but there are other very common causes such as Hormonal Imbalance, Illness, Poor Diet, Poor Hygiene, Drug Abuse and Stress. These are just the core issues that contribute to the hair loss. To get a better understanding of exactly how the hair stops to reproduce entails a bit of a scientific look at how hair actually grows.

Hair grows in 3 stages. In the first stage (Anagen) a new hair is produced and this is the stage where most growth occurs. Next, in the Catagen (Regressive) stage, the hair has stopped growing but is yet to shed. In the final stage (Telogen) the hair is resting and eventually falls out, and a new one begins to grow. In Pattern Baldness, DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) miniaturizes hair follicles by shortening the Anagen (growth) stage and at the same time can also lengthen the Telogen (resting) stage. This is usually a gradual process, and the end result is an increase in the number of short, thin hairs which are barely visible above the scalp.

There is hope, because while any hair is growing then various treatments can be administered to re-balance/block the DHT and promote healthier hair growth once again. There is no single hair loss treatment that works for everyone. In fact, it would be quite amazing if somoene used a single baldness treatment that completely solved their problem. The best hair loss treatment is in fact a combination of the best known products in a way that is tailored to your individual circumstances.

Generally, the most effective regime for preventing/reversing hair loss is a combination of 3 or 4 products:

Why does it so often seem like you turn around and it's midnight when you're raising your kids? It seems like no matter what you do sometimes, there's still a lot more work to do by the time you are ready to go to bed. What can you do?

The first thing you need to do is figure out where your time is going each day. Try making notes one day about what you do and how long it takes. If you're feeling really ambitious, you can try this for a week, since every day is going to be different, but even one day will give you an idea as to where you're using up all your time. It may feel like you're wasting time writing these things down, and they will slow you down a bit for that day, but it can be a big help.

Take a look at what you spent your day doing. Now assign a priority to each. How much time would you prefer to spend on each?

Now if you add all these up, you'll probably find out your day is more than 24 hours long if you include time to sleep. That's how it is being a parent.

The first thing you need to do is figure out what items can be done less often. Can you stand a little mess in the house? Can everyone else? Can you get more help from your spouse and the kids in keeping the house clean? You'll have to decide which solution is right for you.

What about time spent surfing the internet or watching TV? Give yourself time limits on each of these. If you have a Tivo or a VCR, try recording your favorite shows and watching them a little later, skipping the commercials. Not only does this allow you to choose the time you watch your shows, it can cut down their length.

Sometimes it can be hard finding enough time in your day to be with your kids, yet most parents will call this a priority. Just remember that time with your kids isn't just about having fun. Even small children can help out with making dinner, which can be a great time for talking with kids of any age. My three year old daughter has been helping make salads since she was two. The lettuce ends up in either rather large or very small pieces, but she has fun helping and we get some great time together. Older kids may or may not appreciate this time, but it's good for them to help out.

I definitely do not recommend cutting back on whatever meals you insist on eating as a family. This is a great thing to do as a family, and if you aren't making time for family meals, find a way to do so! Even if it's just dinner one night a week together, no activities or sports to run off too, your family needs the time to relax together.

Finally, are there things you can cut out all together? If you feel as though you've been pushed into doing things for others because you're at home and "have time," don't feel guilty about telling people that you do not have the time to do things they want you to do. Your family comes first. If you really want to volunteer, think about either cutting back the number of hours when you need more time for yourself or your family, or volunteering for something you can do as a family.

There are only so many hours to a day, and so many things you'd love to get done. Take a good look at what you need to do, want to do and don't really need to do, and you can find ways to feel a little less overwhelmed most of the time. You'll go through times where there just aren't enough hours in the day even when you know your priorities, but you can cut down on the less important stuff and relieve a lot of your stress.

Normal weight gain in pregnancy is about 35 pounds, but lots of women I have met over my twenty-year midwifery career gained 35 pounds to 70 pounds during pregnancy. The stress of sudden weight gain during the short cycle of pregnancy can cause back pain and pregnancy misery.

Pregnancy posture change:

Pregnancy and lower back pain happens because of pregnancy weight gain and the automatic adjustments your body makes in posture to accommodate the growing womb. This change in posture is called pregnancy lordosis. Upper and lower back pain and pregnancy lordosis go hand in hand because your spine becomes super curved, elongated, and your breast and buttocks stick out pulling and stretching your back muscles.

Pregnancy hormones:

On top of this, back pain and pregnancy go hand in hand because of the higher levels of pregnancy hormones you produce. Pregnancy hormones have a relaxing effect on many of the muscles in your body to accommodate the muscle stretching that is required during pregnancy. Relaxed muscles are not as supportive to the spine and abdominal muscles, therefore many women complain of back pain and pregnancy shoulder stress.

Pregnancy pelvic changes:

The female pelvis is made up of many different bones. When you get towards the end of your pregnancy, a baby cannot fit to a normal-sized woman's pelvis without the pelvis opening and expanding. The pelvis has two major joints; one towards the right and one towards the left of your lower back along with a hinge joint at the very tail end of your spine.

Back pain and pregnancy ligament pulling and stretching is a direct result of your pelvis opening, which will allow your baby's head to engage or enter into the cavity of your pelvis. Pregnancy and lower back pain is also caused by the excess pressure felt deep within your pelvis as your baby sits and waits for labor to commence.

All of these factors taken together, it is not unusual for pregnant women to get backache. So if you get a backache straight away start doing things to prevent your backache from getting worse or getting out of control.

How to help minimize symptoms associated with pregnancy and lower back pain:

I definitely recommend having nice warm bath soaks, putting nice warm compresses on your back, or even better still having back massages to help with your pregnancy and lower back pain.

I would absolutely recommend that every pregnant woman go to see a chiropractor during pregnancy. A lot of traditional obstetrician, gynecologist and midwives are a little afraid of sending the women to a chiropractor because they are just not informed as to what chiropractors actually do. A chiropractor can help your spine accommodate easier to all the posture changes that happens during your pregnancy and relieve pain associated to pulled and stressed muscles associated to pregnancy and lower back pain

Apart from that, let us look at what things can you do to your own body to help minimize back pain and pregnancy. Wearing a good supporting bra during your pregnancy will support the increased breast weight and uplift your breasts so they do not feel so heavy. This will alleviate a lot of the upper back stress associated with pregnancy and lower back pain.

There are also a lot of pregnancy stomach binders that have been created to help support the weight of your growing womb which can help relieve back pain and pregnancy ligament discomfort.

Many women are focused on fashionable shoes and wear ridiculous footwear during pregnancies that do not support their posture and feet. I cannot believe how many pregnant women out there are wearing ridiculously high shoes or low shoes. Remember, as you become more and more pregnant all the bones and muscles within your feet are stressed.

Take a good look at the shoes you are wearing during your pregnancy and ask yourself these questions to evaluate the importance of your feet:

Do your shoes have a good supportive arch in them?

Are your shoes nice and wide to accommodate the increasing growth and widening of my foot associated to extra blood volume and swelling that occurs during pregnancy?

Can your foot easily slip out of your shoe? If so you could trip and fall and injure yourself or your baby.

The more informed you are about pregnancy the better choices you will make. Better choices mean a happier healthier mom and baby. Pregnancy can be an extraordinary experience for a woman. It is far more than growing a baby and understanding pregnancy and lower back pain.

Okay, I'm about to throw you a curve ball. Ready? It's possible that the reason you are having such a hard time losing weight is because the bacteria living inside your gut are out of balance.

Until recently, it was assumed that these bacteria (our microbiome) didn't do much. But now there is a growing body of research suggesting that the 100 trillion bacteria - about three pounds - living inside our gut play a huge role in our health and disease. Researchers believe that this is especially true for the metabolic diseases that plague us today such as Type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Exactly how the microbiome influences our weight isn't known yet, but many researchers believe that it plays a role in processing food and helps determine how many calories and nutrients are absorbed. Certain intestinal microbes may also alter our insulin (a hormone) influencing the way fat is metabolized in our body.

It's complicated and we have much more to learn about this extremely complex system living inside us. We don't have enough hard facts to make specific recommendations on weight loss probiotic (live bacteria that are good for our health) supplements. There are literally thousands of different strains of bacteria and they interact with each other in ways we don't understand. Therefore, probiotic supplements that claim to promote weight loss are premature.

What we do know however is that our dietary habits can have a dramatic impact on the mix of beneficial and harmful bacteria in our gut. Here are five simple steps you can take to support a healthy gut - inside and out.

1. Eat more fiber. Eating fibrous plant foods is an important strategy for improving the robustness of gut bacteria. These plants provide the raw material to feed the bacteria through a process called fermentation. The diversity and number of plants you eat will be reflected in the diversity and number of bacteria in your gut; the more the better. Aim for at least 20 to 30 grams of fiber a day; two to three servings of fruit, four to six servings of veggies, two to three servings of whole grains, nuts and beans several times a week.

2. Make friends with fermented foods. Fermented foods provide probiotics. Greek yogurt and kefir, a tangy dairy drink that's packed with healthy bugs, are a good start. Look for products that say "live and active cultures" on the label, and avoid those with added sugar that can feed undesirable bacteria. Other probiotic powerhouses include naturally fermented sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles; they contain both live bacteria and prebiotics (see below) that nourish gut bacteria.

3. Include prebiotic foods. Prebiotics are a type of soluble fiber found in certain plant foods that act as "food" for probiotics. They are like fertilizer helping probiotics grow and flourish in your gut. Prebiotic-containing foods include Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, leek, asparagus, and banana. Eat some type of prebiotic food every day.

4. Eat less meat. A diet heavy in animal protein feeds a type of bacteria called Bilophilia that has been linked to inflammation in animal studies; and chronic inflammation is a major contributor to obesity. If you are a meat-lover, it's fine to include it in your diet but think of it as a condiment rather than the main course. At least 3/4 of your meal volume should be from plants.

5. Skip the sugar. Sugar feed the undesirable gut bacteria and causes them to thrive. Studies have shown that a diet high in sugar can lead to overgrowth of yeast species and other pathogenic bacteria. For the good bacteria to thrive, they require complex carbohydrates like vegetables, beans, and whole grains - not sugar. When you get too many calories from sugar - the average person eats more than 22 teaspoons a day - the good bacteria will go hungry and eventually die off allowing for an overgrowth of the bad bacteria. Stick with whole foods as much as possible and skip sugary highly processed junk food.

A Personal Perspective on Why Christians Suffer Trials

Among humanity's oldest mysteries are the origin and cause of suffering. We need only look around us to know that the world is filled with suffering. No creature on earth has not experienced some form of pain and suffering. It is the nature of this world. It hasn't always been so. God tells us that He made the world perfect, and we know that in those early days there was no sin, no suffering, no death, decay or disease.

Suffering came about after Adam and Eve gave into temptation1. With their act of rebellion against God, sin and suffering entered the world and now all creation is feeling its effects2.

Although sin is the root of most suffering, i.e. the result of personal sin, what about those who suffer hardship despite having done absolutely nothing wrong?

People often point to the trials of Job, that Old Testament patriarch who went from wealthy landowner and happy parent, to a bewildered, broken, childless and penniless man in only a short amount of time3. God said that Job was blameless and lived an upright life4, yet the man suffered.

That man's suffering came about because God pointed out how upright and righteous Job was when He called the angels to heaven to talk with them5. When God talked to the devil about Job's righteousness, the enemy threw a fit, belittled Job's righteousness6 and was given permission to attack Job, first through loss of material possessions and his children7, and when that didn't work, the devil was given permission to attack Job's body directly8.

The only real fault Job had was in thinking that he was a good man in his own right, that doing good would bring about rewards. When he sought to vindicate himself before God9, the Creator corrected him10.

Job suffered because God intended to teach us and the devil a lesson: that He is in control of all creation and always worthy of praise10.

But people since that time have looked at Job's problems and wondered how that man's hardship could be applied to their own lives. What about others who haven't had a chance to live a full life? Why do they suffer? What about the truly innocent? The infants, the extremely mentally disabled? Why do they suffer?

Well, the answer can be found in the life of one Man, indeed He is the most important Man of all. Jesus Christ never sinned11. He is God. Yet, He suffered every day throughout His earthly life and indeed He suffered since sin came upon the human race12

How so? Because God hates sin13. Because God created a gentle and happy world for humans and animals to live in. Every bit of sorrow and misery that humanity and animals experience indeed hurts God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit14.

We all hurt God. The devil hurts God by attacking the Lord's creation. More directly to how we all hurt God: when Jesus was spat upon, flogged, stabbed and crucified he was hurt by each and every one of us15,16,17. So, for any who doubt that anything in creation can hurt God, I hope this has dispelled that misconception.

The wonderful thing is that Jesus triumphed over suffering and death18. His sacrifice on the cross means that His children will have eternal life19. Any man, woman and child who accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior will have eternal life20. That's His promise to us.

But it doesn't come instantly. By that I mean, becoming Christian doesn't make the earthly problems go away. Often times, Christians suffer even greater problems21.

That's what makes many people scratch their heads. It seems counter-intuitive - follow God and you have pain, go your own way and things seem to be okay.

Note how I said "seem". Those who think they're in total control secretly know that most things in this life are still beyond their ability to regulate. Those folks have two options: accept that they need God's help or they can continue their own way and ultimately lose their very soul22.

But that doesn't seem to address the reality of Christian suffering.

Jesus told us that in this world we shall suffer trials23. In response many of us are quick to ask "why?". Jesus also told us that because He suffered (and suffers) hatred, all of us who follow Him will also suffer it24.

It's often said that Christians are to imitate Christ25, to obey and love Him and to love all humans as brothers and sisters26.

People may not realize that Christians also share something else with Jesus Christ: an inheritance27. Yes, an eternal treasure waiting in heaven28. Christians - yes, the adopted children of God - are joint heirs with Jesus Christ29. This means that to be like Christ is to have the same rewards as our first Brother.

A long time ago a powerful angel named Lucifer got the idea in his head that he could be like God in power, splendor and glory30. The instant that thought entered Lucifer's mind, he went from being a good angel to the leader of the fallen angels.

Lucifer, also known as the dragon and Satan, the enemy of God and the adversary of man is forever finished31. He can never be redeemed. In fact, when God told Adam and Eve they had to leave Eden, he comforted the husband and wife by telling them that the devil was going to be defeated by Jesus Christ32. That is why Jesus came to live among us, to remove sin, give us a way home and to defeat the devil. He has done that. The devil has lost.

But even though the devil has been defeated, God hasn't locked him up yet. That won't come until God's appointed time31. What we need to know about how this relates to Christian suffering is this: Satan and his demons have always been jealous of God30. Now that God has countless millions and billions of adopted sons and daughters - the Christians - who shall be joint heirs with Jesus Christ, the devil's hatred against those adopted children is going to be felt.

God allows suffering as an expression of love33. It's hard to accept, I know. But the suffering that comes about when you have done absolutely nothing wrong, is the result of God allowing the devil to attack you because you are a son or daughter of God34. That's the heart and essence of what it means to be like God. It means to suffer like God. To suffer like Christ.

The very truth that "to be like God" means enduring hardship and suffering is beyond the devil's comprehension. The enemy has deceived the world into thinking that a loving God would always protect His loved ones from all harm. Therefore, the devil and his followers can never accept or understand the perfect suffering of Jesus Christ. That is why they mock - and attack - those who endure pain for the sake of God.

That's not to say that we should run headlong into suffering. Jesus did tell his disciples to spread out when calamity strikes35. So suffering just to suffer is not recommended.

But when you suffer for things you have not done, when you are totally blameless, remember that it is God suffering, too. Because you belong to God and God loves you, you will suffer.

Take comfort in knowing that it won't last forever. Because God lives now and always and the Christian lives in God as part of God, then the Christian will live for eternity36. And at GOD's appointed time, the devil will be imprisoned forever and ever and will never again harm or plague creation31.

When you talk about genetic hair loss most people think about the most common form of hair loss: male-pattern baldness. This is the type of hair loss that is passed on genetically to offspring from their mothers. Most often the recipients of this type of hair loss are men, but sometimes the gene can result in female hair loss.

While genetic baldness in men is identified by a receding hairline or balding crown, genetic hair loss in women is a bit different. In most cases, a woman will not lose her hair in spots only but will thin out evenly throughout the head. Sometimes, this thinning can be quite severe and result in the woman having to wear a wig to cover up her thinning tresses. While female hair loss almost never results in a completely bald head, it can be extreme enough to expose the scalp quite plainly.

For the woman facing this type of hair loss, there are a few hair loss treatment options that can be explored. They include shampoos, conditioners and topical treatments, such as Rogaine for women, which stimulate hair growth and prevent further hair loss; vitamin supplements; and stimulatory treatments such as massage and infra-red therapy. The most successful of these hair loss treatments are the topical treatments. While they are quite expensive, they produce the best results.

Hair loss due to chemical processes
No matter how healthy and strong your hair is today, you could experience severe hair loss after undergoing a harsh chemical process such as a perm or color. While almost all chemical hair fallout is due to operator error, the chance of it occurring is multiplied by chemical services that you perform on your hair at home. I've seen more than one case of female hair loss in clients who have bleached their hair at home, colored it over and then came to the salon for yet another bleaching. Not knowing this past history, the stylist used too strong a chemical, and the process resulted in hair loss.

Since most of these cases do not result in complete hair loss, the hair loss treatment options include protein treatments and other conditioning treatments to strengthen the remaining hair; a good hair cut that will remove most of the damage; and a gentle hair-care routine that will minimize further hair loss due to breakage. You should also refrain from using thermal styling tools and undergoing any further chemical procedures until the hair is completely grown out.

Hair loss due to stress
Cases of severe stress can literally cause handfuls of hair loss at a time. Women experiencing stressful conditions can experience female hair loss represented by thinning all over the head or in spots called alopecia areata. Alopecia areata means "Hair loss in spots or areas," and can result in bald circular patches on one or more spots of the scalp. While this type of hair loss is alarming, it is not permanent. After the stress is removed, most sufferers of this type of hair loss regrow all of the hair that they lost.

In most cases, the hair loss treatment for stress-related hair loss is minimal. After ruling out other causes of hair loss, your doctor will likely recommend changes in your diet or ideas to help alleviate your stress. Keep in mind that it can take months for your hair to grow back even after the stressors have been eliminated.

Hair loss due to illness
Any type of extended illness or surgery can result in hair loss. Medications taken to combat certain types of illnesses can also cause your hair to become brittle and break or fall out altogether. The most identifiable type of hair loss is the loss associated with chemotherapy treatments. In most cases, this hair loss is complete and affects all areas of the body. While there is little that can be done to prevent this type of hair loss or promote growth during illness, surgery or chemotherapy treatments, this type of female hair loss is also temporary. In most cases, full recovery of hair is made after the illness is over.

You can promote hair growth after the illness by getting regular trims and using growth enhancing shampoos and conditioners. Vitamin supplements may also be beneficial.

As you may have already guessed, hair loss in women is more common than we might think. And many may be experiencing hair loss and dismiss it as a natural occurrence that comes along with age. A lot of these women fail to seek the necessary hair loss treatment that can help them keep their remaining hair and regrow new hair. So, if you are experiencing hair loss, do not think that it is just because you are getting older. There may be something that you can do to keep the hair on your head from clogging your drain.

Before you can learn to relax you must first be able to recognize tension. I have seen many classes where members were told to relax, and they and the teacher believed they had been successful when, in fact, their muscles were still tense. Some people have acquired the habit of muscle tension over a great many years and are so accustomed to it that they are unaware of inappropriate contraction of muscles. It is no use telling such people to relax; they are quite unaware they are tense or what it feels like to be relaxed. Knowledge is required about the state of the muscles. Here are some tips that you can consider to adopt to relax yourself.

1. Recognizing Tension By Touch

The most natural and also one of the most effective methods of assessing muscle tension and relaxation is by touch, by actually feeling the difference between a tense, contracted muscle and a soft resting one, either on yourself or on other people. You can feel the varying degrees of tension in your arm in the following way. Reach across with one hand and take hold of the top of your upper arm. Raise that arm a little and make the whole of it tense. You will feel the muscle go tight and hard. Feel all over the arm. Then let the arm rest by your side and feel the difference. The muscles are soft and you can get hold of handfuls of flesh. Now do this again but without actually moving the arm, just prepare to lift it. As you do this you will feel a differing degree of tension. This is the sort of contraction you make when you are on the alert and ready fro action. Release the tension and feel the contrast. You will notice that, when it is soft and relaxed, your shoulder has dropped also and is no longer held tightly.

2. Learning By Observation

Another way of recognizing tension is to observe movement in other people. Watch dancers, golfers, musicians, even someone beating an egg or driving a car and spot the tense and relaxed phases of the movement. Grace and ease of movement are the result of economy of effort with muscles contracting only when they are needed. Look out for tension in other people and notice tight shoulders, neck, ankles. Some people remain tense when they are asleep.

3. Partner Testing Relaxation In Neck Muscles

Kneel behind your partner who lies on his/her back with knees bent. Cup your hands under your head and lift it very gently just a little way. Feel the weight of it. If the neck muscles are relaxed, the head offers no resistance. If the muscles are tense you can see the tendons standing out as the muscles lift the head.

4. Feeling Tension In Hands

Grasp one wrist with the other hand. Grip it tightly so that your muscles show white and you are actually holding up the underneath hand. Feel the strength of this grip on your resting hand. Now release the tension and feel the difference; the fingers on the top hand are feather-light and the underneath hand is giving all the support. Try to notice when you hold your hands tight during the day, and notice other people too.

5. Feeling Tension In Neck Muscles

Feel the muscles in the back of your neck by taking hold of them as though you were picking a cat up by the scruff of its neck. If your head is resting easily the muscles are soft. Keep hold and slowly jut your head forward to the tense position. You will feel the muscles go tight and hard under your hand. You can sometimes see tramlines of tension in these muscles.

6. Testing Relaxation With A Partner

Try this out on your friends and see whether they can relax arm muscles. Place one hand under the wrist and the other under the elbow. Lift the arm and if it is relaxed it will feel heavy and limp. You will be able to move it easily because your partner neither helps or hinders the movement. If you let go it will immediately drop to the side. Some people will resist the movement or tighten up to offer the arm to you. Others really relax and you can tell this at once. By testing this way, even if your partner cannot relax, it gives you an idea of what tension and relaxation feels like, and also of the wide variety of individual differences between people.

7. Learning By Contrasting Contraction And Relaxation Of Muscles

This method is favoured by clinical psychologists, behavioural therapists and many relaxation teachers. It involves a systematic routine of contracting strongly each group of muscles of the body in turn and then releasing the tension. All parts of the body are involved and learning and practice take a long time. These strong contractions certainly help many people recognize the difference between tension and relaxation but there is now evidence that some anxious people find it difficult to dissipate the tension and are actually more tense afterwards.
