Breast Cancer Patients With Pre-Existing Diabetes Are At Higher Mortality Risk

by

The Journal of Clinical Oncology reports that breast cancer patients with pre-exisiting diabetes have higher mortality risk than their non-diabetic counterparts.

Dr. Kimberly S. Peairs and other researchers performed a complex meta-analysis (analysis of data gathered from many studies with similar hypotheses) to ascertain the effect that pre-existing diabetes would have on breast cancer.

They found evidence that patients with pre-existing diabetes and breast cancer are more likely to die than those who do not have diabetes. They also found that pre-diabetic breast cancer patients

  • tend to be diagnosed for breast cancer at more advanced stages of the disease
  • have increased toxicity from chemotherapy drugs that are used to treat the cancer
  •  have altered regimens for cancer treatment

Although there is no definitive reason for this outcome, the researchers do propose further studies be conducted to determine the relationship between the two diseases and whether improved diabetic care may lower mortality incidence in breast cancer patients with diabetes.

The Relationship Between Obesity, Diabetes and Breast Cancer

This sounds like bad news for people at risk for diabetes and breast cancer.

Other research already points to a relationship between obesity and increased risk of breast cancer (read the article Studies Link Obesity and Breast Cancer) which suggests that people who don't get enough rest, thus making them more prone to obesity (read the article Get Some Sleep! ) may also be at increased risk of developing Type II diabetes.

Thus physical activity is very important to reducing the risk of adult-onset diabetes and cancer.

As a matter of fact, Dr. James McCain, cancer prevention fellow at the National Cancer Institute says that people whom are very active reduce their risk of developing cancer by 25 %  (read The Surprising Links Between Sleep, Exercise and Breast Cancer ).

There Is Hope

The Journal of Clinical Oncology report is not the death-knell for diabetic breast cancer patients. There is hope for breast cancer patients whom have also been diagnosed with diabetes.

One of the most effective prevention methods for either of these diseases is to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Even those with a genetic predisposition for breast cancer or diabetes can still reduce their risk of illness and death if they take charge of their lives.

Make a promise to yourself to eat right, get regular exercise (strength training and cardio are a fantastic combo), get plenty of sleep, and allow yourself to be happy.

Doing these things will make life much more enjoyable and improve your overall health and outlook on life.
