Milk antibodies found in whey protein that combat harmful intestinal bacteria can be helpful in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and alleviating symptoms of gastrointestinal disorder. Results from a small open-labelled pilot study in Japan found that milk antibodies improves the condition of a sub-set of RA patients and eases gastrointestinal disorders symptoms.

For the study, which was published in the January 2011 issue of Nutrition Journal, Japanese scientists from the Katayama Orthopedic Rheumatology Clinic in Ashikawa, Japan selected thirty-eight volunteers whom were receiving treatment at the Clinic for rheumatoid arthritis. The scientists divided the patients into two groups: the first group consisted of twenty patients whom over a period of three months were adminstered whey protein concentrations containing high levels of milk antibodies. Additionally, those test subjects continued their current medication. The second group was comprised of eighteen patients whom served as controls i.e. they did not receive milk antibodies.

Of the patients who received the milk antibodies, ten experienced a reduction in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms demonstrating that milk antibodies have an effect on intestinal bacteria that cause RA flare-ups. Moreover, eleven out of fourteen patients in the test group whom also had gastrointestinal disorder (GI) reported that the whey products eased their symptoms. This is significant because, as the authors point out, the majority of patients who suffer from GI disorders tend to be senior cittizens. Therefore supplementation with milk antibodies can do much to alleviate discomfort in the stomach and intestines of people who suffer gastrointestinal disturbance.

Please keep in mind that these results are based on a pilot study. Yet it is good news in the fight against rheumatoid arthritis. The success of the Katayama Orthopedia Rheumatology Clinic's research trial lays the ground work for further investigations into the use of milk antibodies to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis.
