Fructose isn't bad for you - if you eat it in moderate amounts. That's what has been concluded in a report published last November in Nutrition & Metabolism.
Much attention has been focused on the dangers of high fructose corn syrup. Therefore, Salwa W Rizkalla of the Universite Pierre et Marie-Curie in Paris, France undertook an extensive review of research linking dietary fructose to insulin resistance, obesity and other health risk markers.
Although there was evidence that rats that are fed a diet rich in fructose develop a host of health problems including fatty acid synthesis and circulating very low density lipoprotein (bad cholesterol), insulin resistance and extra body fat, Rizkalla found that no data could support a direct link between moderate fructose consumption and health risk markers in humans.
Fructose is okay providing you don't consume too much of it. I can agree with that, I've long since been a proponent of limited consumption of high glycemic index foods. But the fact that high fructose corn syrup is an ingredient in most of the foods we eat (think candy bars, ice cream, pasties, canned pasta, etc.), nearly two thirds of US residents are overweight or obese, and young people are struggling to lose weight (read A Conversation With A Fat Kid) eating moderate amounts of fructose is going to be a challenge for many Americans.
