"Pete"
You'll like Pete. Everybody likes Pete. At 30 years of age, this guy's accomplished a lot: he's married with a wife and kid, a good house, two cars and money in the bank. Pete can afford all of this because for the past eight years has been employed as a software engineer at popular IT company.
Pete puts in long hours because he enjoys his work and the high pay that he earns. Pete never gets any exercise. He's been dieting on and off for the past few years, losing and regaining weight over and over again. Right now he's topped out at 435 pounds.
Pete doesn't like himself. He's a fat slob and he knows that everyone knows it. Pete wishes that his body was in shape. He wants to be a romantic hero to his wife, a champion wakeboarder and to be able to play with his kid.
But those are his dreams. In reality, Pete's feet hurt whenever he walks and now he can't even mow his own lawn without coming up short of breath. When Pete looks at himself now, he hates what he sees.
Pete doesn't exercise but he does find time to eat. The long hours and stress of the job make him hungry all the time. Most of his lunches are purchased at his favorite fast food restaurant.
There's also a convenience mart just a few blocks from his home. This is Pete's go to place on his way home from work. He buys high carb foods to snack on until supper or while watching a weekend game at home on television.
Pete has a family history of obesity and heart disease - his brothers, uncles and parents are overweight. Two years ago, Pete's dad suffered a major stroke that has caused permanent disability that prevents the fifty-three year old man from doing many of the things he once enjoyed.
Last week, Pete's own health fears compelled him to go in for a check up. The doctor diagnosed Pete as a type II diabetic and warned him that he's in grave danger of a fatal heart attack. Now the reality of it all comes rushing over Pete like a terrible wave: if he doesn't do something - and soon - his body is going to give out and he won't even live to see forty.
