According to new research, removal of adenomatous polyps can reduce colon cancer deaths. The finding, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, suggests that colonoscopic procedures can effectively prevent fatalities caused by this type of cancer.
Ann Zauber, from the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, made the determination after during a study which examined the long term effects of colonscopic polypectomy procedures on colon cancer mortality.
To this end, Zauber and her colleagues compared the results from the Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program to patients who underwent colonoscopies during 1980 - 1990 (total 2602).
They followed the patients for up to 23 years and used the National Death Index to track the cause of death of patients who died during the course of the study. Only 12 of the patients died of cancer. Compared to the expected number of deaths in the general population (25.4 %), the lower mortality rate among patients in the current study, Zauber's team calculated that colonoscopic polypectomies reduced patient mortality by 53 %.
In plain speak: surgically removing colon polyps saved lives.
What Does This Mean To You?
March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. According to government estimates, colorecectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men and women in the United States. As recently as 2007, the disease claimed the lives of 53,219 people.
While practicing a healthy lifestyle - physical exercise, good nutrition and positive frame of mind are all very important for cancer prevention- medical checkups should be included in the mix.
Zauber and her colleagues were able to prove that colonoscopic polypectomy is effective in reducing colon cancer mortality which is very important to keep in mind this month, and throughout the year.
