The dreaded plateau. It's something that will instantly cause your motivation to plummet and annoyance to set in but yet something that almost every athlete will deal with from time to time.
Training and fitness plateaus are frustrating to say the least, but fortunately, if you have a good game plan in mind, you can quickly get past them and get back on to seeing the results that you're after.
The key is realizing why fitness plateaus occur in the first place and then understanding what you need to do about them to get yourself back on track.
Let's look at the main things that you should know.
What Training Plateaus Are
Simply put, a training plateau is a period of time when you are now longer seeing progress from your workout routine. Very often the reason that these occur is simply because you're no longer challenging your body with enough stimulus to keep responding.

So to get past this plateau, it's simple - you just need to change things up and get it responding again.

All of these will evoke enough change in the workout program overall that it should get you back on track to seeing success again.
Now, there is one instance where this won't work and that is if you're on the verge of overtrainng. In some cases lack of progress is simply due to the body being over taxed and not recovering enough between the workouts that you're doing.
If this is the case, the best course of action is to take one week off. While it may seem contradictory to your goals, trust me, take the week off and you'll come back making progress like never before.
If you've tried everything else and nothing is working, the week off is what you need.

Finally, last but not least, remember that prevention is really the best medicine when it comes to training plateaus. If you can design your workouts so that they're constantly changing and you're adding new elements into the mix, chances are you'll never experience the plateau in the first place.
