Is Your Diet Colorblind?

Is Your Diet Colorblind?

Is Your Diet Colorblind?

By: Lee Dobbins

Next time you have a meal, look at your plate - what colors do you see? If its mostly white and brown then your diet might be colorblind!

In order to have a healthy diet you need foods from all the food groups and that means a colorful plate. Just eating meat and potatoes won't provide you with the essential vitamins and minerals you need to stay in your best health - you need to add in colorful fruits and vegetables!

If you want a good balanced diet, here's some colors you might want to see next time you look down at your plate:

Green colored foods like peas, kale, spinach, honeydew melons, kiwifruit, dark leafy lettuces, and leafy greens contain lutein which helps maintain good vision and can help reduce the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Another green group includes broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, swiss chard, brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnips, cauliflower, and watercress. These foods contain indoles, which can help reduce the risks of cancer and reduce tumor growth in cancer patients.

The yellow orange colored food are high in bioflavonoids, which work in combination with vitamin C to help reduce the risk of cancer and heart attack. They also contain powerful antioxidants and help maintain healthy skin, strong bones, and good vision. The foods in this group include oranges, tangerines, pears, lemons, nectarines, grapefruit, peaches, apricots, pineapple, pineapple, yellow raisins, and yellow peppers.

Blue and Purple

Blueberries, purple grapes, blackberries, black currents and elderberries contain
Anthocyanins which can reduce the risks of heart attack, cancer, diabetic complications, Alzheimer's disease and age-related memory loss. Dark purple foods contain phenolics, which are powerful antioxidants and can help to slow the effects of aging.

Dark orange foods like pumpkin, sweet potatoes, apricots, peaches, carrots, cantaloupes, mangoes, and butternut squash contain beta-carotene, a powerful antioxident that can help keep your immune system healthy as well as maintain good vision and can even aid in reducing heart attacks and cancer.

Tomatoes, guava, watermelon and pink grapefruit are all red colored foods. These foods contain lycopene which has been much publicized lately as helping to protect against prostate cancer. In addition, these foods can help reduce the risk of breast, and skin cancer as well as reduce the risk of heart attack.

Red onion, cherries, kidney beans, raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, beets, red apples (with the skin), and red cabbage contain anthocyanins, powerful antioxidants that can help control high blood pressure as well as reduce the risks of cancer, heart attack, Alzheimer's disease, and diabetes complications.

One way to get a colorful plate at every meal is to try to fit in 5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Try to include food from all these color groups at least once during the day and you will be surprised at how much your health improves.

How To Set Dynamic Fitness Goals That Give You Future Success

How To Set Dynamic Fitness Goals That Give You Future Success

Submitted by: Jason Camacho

Goals are huge for anyone looking for success. It doesn't matter what kind of Fitness Program you're following or what goals you're aiming for, you need to set goals. I know it's a a few days past New Year's but I thought that I'd expand on this "New Year's Resolution" idea and how you can maximize your Fitness Program by setting the right goals, the right way.

This is why I want you to start off fresh and make your New Year's Resolution. Why? Because your new year's resolution can be your way of setting true goals that you can follow and succeed with.

Research shows that individuals who set goals for themselves have been more successful reaching those goals, while those who don't do anything about their goals, end up failing.

Why A New Year's Resolution

When you make a new year's resolution, it tends to be one of the biggest goals you're trying to achieve and the one thing you're very serious about. This is where you need to take action and set your Six Pack goals for this upcoming year (its currently 2012). I know the world is supposed to "end" but why not set goals that you can aim for with the "small time we have left?"

There are a number of reasons that a New Year's Resolution is so much more extreme than normal everyday goals.

-You feel as if you've started fresh, instead of halfway through the year

-You feel like you have more time to succeed and aren't "short on time" since you have an entire year

-For some reason we naturally have a stronger desire to succeed when we turn our goals into New Year's Resolutions

-You feel like you "reset "your life and tossed aside all of your past failures as opposed to carrying that baggage around when you start midway through the year

-Surveys show New Year's Resolutions tend to be more permanent and produce more success than normal everyday goals we randomly decide to put into place.

How To Go About Your Six Pack Goals

I've decided to break down the perfect goal-setting method into two words, S.I.X. P.A.C.C. Now, this is the way I go about my goals and I only share this method with you because it's the right way to set goals and the only method that's proven to give me results time after time.

There are individuals who don't set goals, individuals who don't set their goals right, and individuals who set goals the right way. I want you to be as successful as possible with your Fitness Program and the only way you can succeed is if you set goals, the right way.

Before we get into the details of this method actually let me explain what each letter stands for. S=satisfying, I=Intense, X=exciting, P=permanent, A=attainable, C=concrete C=conceivable.

That's the basic idea of this method and like I said earlier, this is the only way you should be setting your six pack ab goals, especially while you still have time to call them "New Year's Resolutions." Now that you have the basic concept down, let's get into the details of this method now.

You're probably wondering what satisfaction has to do with succeeding with your goals. Think about it this way. Do you want to reach for six pack goals that are going to satisfy you or do you want to go for goals that will give you partial satisfaction?

When you aim for goals that will satisfy you, you're more likely to work harder and succeed in reaching those goals. For instance, let's say your six pack goal for 2012 is to lose a certain amount of body fat.

However, deep down you know that you won't be satisfied until you get those toned six pack abs. Now you feel pretty good once you reach your body fat loss goal but you aren't satisfied yet.

Your real goal is to get toned abs, so you move on from your first goal to an even higher goal. This is the kind of un-satisfaction that most goals bring to many individuals, and I want to help you avoid this unsatisfactory feeling. So, instead of moving on from goal to goal, make your New Year's Resolution one that will satisfy you completely once you've finally reached it. Satisfaction is our whole reason for setting any kind of goals.

You're goals should be intense, plain and simple. When I say intense I mean that you shouldn't aim for something that's so easily attainable, but rather push yourself to new heights by going for something intense. Here's an example: you're a rather thin body typed individual and your goal is to gain weight.

Your goal for 2012 is to gain 15 pound of muscle by the end of the year, but you only choose that goal because you know how easy it is to attain that goal within a year's time. This gives you the ability to take it easy and slack off since you have a whole year to take the "rollercoaster ride" of gaining muscle as you workout, and losing it as you slack off.

Now if you were to make your goal intense you would push your body to its limits and make yourself really have to work hard throughout the entire 2012 year.

An intense goal would be aiming to gain 40 pounds of muscle by the end of the year instead of going for the mediocre kind of goals that most individuals go for. Get the best out of your six pack ab goals and make them intense, because I promise your results will be well worth it.

Who wants goals that are plain boring? No one! We want goals that excite us and cause us to work harder because of our excitement. Yes, the "excitement effect" can play a dramatic role on how you succeed with you six pack ab goals.

How? When you're excited for something, do you have patience for it or do you want to do anything and everything to get to whatever it is you're excited about? Obviously patience isn't an option because you're so eager for that one thing.

That excitement causes you to work harder and do anything in your power to reach whatever it is you want. This is how your goal should be. If you set goals that excite you then you'll do anything you can to reach those goals, no questions asked.

This will cause you to work harder, stay consistent with your goals and remain untampered by everything life throws at you. Trust me, make your goals exciting and you'll have no problem reaching that goal in no time.

Temporary goals are ones that you make for yourself and have no desire of really reaching them. You make those goals just for the sake of making them to be like everyone else. These kind of goals will get you nowhere, because your goals need to be permanent.

You have to set goals that you know you'll follow and not give up halfway through. If you're aiming to set powerful six pack ab goals for the upcoming year, you have to make sure those goals are permanent ones that you'll stick with. When you set temporary goals, you're basically telling yourself that you have no intention of actually reaching them, but instead you're intentions are to quit halfway.

Don't be like everyone else out there, but set powerful, permanent goals that you know you'll get far with in the next upcoming year.

Your goals should be attainable. When you set goals that aren't realistic, you aren't going to get anywhere with those goals because you're setting yourself up for failure. What this means is that you have good intentions for reaching your goals, but there's just no way in reality that you can possibly accomplish this.

So you feel as if you can reach those goals, but when you do realize it's not possible to reach them, you lose confidence and give up. This happens too much when people set their goals and I don't want you failing with your goals.

So set goals that are attainable for you, set yourself up for success, and reach those goals. Keep in mind that attainable goals can also be extremely hard if you want to push yourself, so you don't have to set easy goals just to make them attainable.

Be smart about setting your goals by making them both attainable and difficult, and you'll see amazing results once you do reach those goals.

Concrete is tough, unmoving, and difficult to crack. This is the way your goals should be when you set them. Set your goals to be immovable and tough, because there will be times when you want to give up and move on to something different by changing those goals.

I don't want you cycling through different goals, but rather I want you to set goals that set you up for success in the future. Also, there will be times when people will try to bring you down or stop you from accomplishing your goals out of jealousy, and this is usually where you'll break down and give up.

I want to save you from this kind of situation, by telling you beforehand to establish goals that are unmoving and tough. This will set you up for success and prepare you for those kind of situation since you'll already have established concrete goals.

By setting goals like this, you'll notice yourself naturally mirror your goals, and become immovable and unchanging yourself.

If you can conceive it then you can do it. This is the philosophy you should follow when setting your goals for this year. Many people limit themselves or overestimate themselves because they don't have an understanding of what is conceivable and what isn't.

If you take the time and really ponder what is conceivable for you, then you'll be setting yourself up for success in the future with your goals. Set a graph for yourself that outlines the absolute least you want to achieve out of your goals and the absolute limit you have that is still conceivable.

Basically understand the absolute least you want out of your goals and understand that absolute most you can possibly do. By doing this, you'll have an understanding of what is conceivable for your goals, and what you can really accomplish.

Set yourself up for success and set goals that you can actually conceive because you'll see much more success in reaching your goals by doing this.

Cancer Survivors Have Poor Diets

People who come through perhaps the most physically and emotionally traumatic fight of their lives still face a battle for long term recovery and survival. According to a report published in Cancer, the diets of cancer survivors is far worse than US government recommendations. This sad, and alarming finding reveals that cancer survivors need a helping hand if they are to regain their health following debilitating illness.

It is a fact that cancer drains physical and emotional energy. Due to the nature of the disease, cancerous cells require vast stores of glucose for energy, which causes depleted energy reserves for noncancerous cells.

Cancer survivors often undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy or surgery in order to eradicate the malignant cells. Medical treatment, then, places a physical strain on the surviving patient.

Unfortunately many cancer survivors lack the emotional and physical ability to properly care for themselves following treatment.

Many are too sick to work and this affects their ability to pay for food. Moreover, the mental strain associated with cancer takes an incredible toll. People may not have the desire to eat even if they have the financial means to purchase food.

Results from cancer patients whom participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999 to 2010 reveal the severity of the problem.

Researchers compared the dietary intake and quality of 1533 adult cancer survivors to 3075 participants with no cancer history; the participants were matched by age, sex, and race/ethnicity.

They learned that cancer survivors had very low scores for empty calories and "worse adherence" to dietary intake from added sugars, solid fats, and alcohol. Cancer survivors also consumed less dietary fiber than non-cancer controls.

The mean dietary intake of cancer survivors' saturated fat was 112% of the recommended intake and sodium was 133% of the recommended intake of this nutrient.

When researchers looked at the mean dietary intake of vitamins among cancer survivors they noted the following:

  • vitamin D 31%
  • vitamin E 47%
  • potassium 55%
  • fiber 60%
  • calcium 73%

The team concluded that cancer survivors poorly adhered to the USDA's 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and their intake patterns were worse than those in the general population for fiber and empty calories.

The dangers of malnutrition are obvious. The human body is in a constant state of renewal, food fuels the normal processes of respiration, circulation, cellular repair and waste removal and all the other bodily functions that are too numerous to mention in this article.

Cancer survivors will have a difficult road to recovery if they are malnourished.

Lend a helping hand to the poor! Whether they be poor of wealth or spirit, give of yourself to them in the name of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. For this is what God wants us to do, and in so doing we show that we are children of God.

Oftentimes people need help even if they don't realize it, or have too much pride to admit it. In the case of those who are coming out of such terrible circumstances, look in on them, and when able, cook for them or go shopping for them. Because serving one another is what God commands us to do, and serving in the name of God is a wonderful expression of love.

Are You Losing Body Fat Or Water?

Are You Losing Body Fat Or Water?

Submitted by: Meri Raffetto

“I tried that diet and lost 8 pounds in the first week!”

“I’ve gained three pounds in one day! It must have been the cookie I ate or maybe the mashed potatoes!”

Stepping on the scale can become an anxiety filled event that leaves people wondering where they went wrong when the numbers don’t go in the right direction. This leads to panic and usually ends with blaming a particular food item that really wasn’t the culprit. Everyone who has been on a journey to lose weight has been there before. Even though you are following your plan and exercising regularly the number may go up 1-2 pounds or even up to 3-4 pounds creating unnecessary guilt that we have failed somehow. If it’s not always food that makes our weight creep up then what is it that causes these fluctuations on the scale?

When trying to lose weight the scale often becomes the only measurement of success and this makes it difficult to remember that every time we step on a scale it is measuring every part of our physical being at that moment in time, which means it measures our fat, muscles, organs, tissue and water weight. Body fat is not the only thing being measured. While organs and tissue don’t change much; fat, muscle, and water do change which can result in fluctuating numbers on the scale.

Water weight can affect your total weight anywhere from 1-10 pounds and sometimes even more. It is important to understand what kinds of dietary factors can make these fluid shifts happen. To start, many of the high protein, low carbohydrate diets can cause a dramatic shift in your water weight. This is because as you cut back carbohydrate intake your body starts breaking down the stored carbohydrates (glycogen) to use as energy, and this breakdown causes the body to excrete large amounts of water. Once the body begins to use stored fat for energy, weight loss slows. This is the reason why most people lose a significant amount of weight right away on a low carb, high protein diet. Extreme low carb, high protein diets can potentially lead to dehydration because of this significant fluid loss.

When a person following a low carb plan eats a carbohydrate-rich food they can easily gain 1-3 pounds. However, this weight gain can be misleading because it is usually your body replenishing the fluid it lost and not gained fat. This 3 pound fluctuation becomes frustrating for many people and they end up yo-yoing back and forth with fluid weight thinking that it must be the half cup of rice they had the night before that caused them to gain that 3 pounds when in fact eating the rice just allowed them to regain some of the fluid they had lost from following a strict low carb plan. The fact is carbohydrates do not affect your weight quite that simply. Excess carbohydrates can strongly stimulate insulin production, which promotes fat deposition and increases appetite. This kind of weight gain will happen gradually, not dramatically overnight.

Sodium is another dietary component that can lead to fluid gain. Sodium can cause the body to retain fluid, leading to these frustrating daily weight fluctuations. Some people are more sensitive to sodium than others. Watch your diet and see if your weight gain corresponds with a high sodium meal the day before. For example, eating out in restaurants can often increase your sodium intake significantly.

The best way to tell if you are retaining fluid is to pay attention to your body. If you get indentations on your ankles and lower legs from your socks then you are retaining fluid. If you wear rings and they become tight and leave an imprint in your fingers when you take them off then you also retaining fluid. Any kind of puffiness in your skin is a good indication of water weight.

The bottom line is that it takes 3500 calories to gain or lose 1 pound of body fat. This equates to an extra 500 calories a day over 7 days to gain a pound. This means if you gained 3 pounds in one day you can chalk it up to fluid weight otherwise you would have had to consume 10,500 extra calories that day which is not likely! True weight gain happens gradually and likewise we lose it gradually. Check your weight weekly instead of daily and look for overall trends. If you are seeing dramatic daily changes in your weight, it is likely the ever-changing shifts of our body’s water weight.

It's easy to praise God when things go well, it's also just as easy to forget Him when things are going well, the test of love comes when you praise and rely on Him when things are going badly. The fallen angels suffered no calamities yet they hated God. Therefore our light sufferings serve as testament of our faith in Jesus Christ just as the trials of Job did. God is always God.

Why Cat’s Claw May Be One Of Nature’s Most Powerful Healers

Why Cat’s Claw May Be One Of Nature’s Most Powerful Healers

Submitted by: Steve P Smith

Cat’s claw, known as una de gato in Spanish, is a herb derived from a vine-type plant which grows widely in the countries of Central and South America, and is particularly common in the Amazon rainforests and Peru. So vast and botanically rich are the wilds of the Amazon rain forest that many herbal practitioners still look to it as a potential source of powerful, but as yet undiscovered, herbal remedies. Although this hope might seem to some like wishful thinking, the example of cat’s claw suggests that it may not be entirely fanciful; because although the herb has only very recently become known in the West, it has been used as health tonic and treatment by the indigenous peoples of the region for many centuries.

But the claims made for the benefits of cat’s claw need to be treated with some caution, because there are those who would have you regard it as something akin to a miracle herb or universal panacea; and orthodox medicine, as always, is rightly sceptical of the wilder claims of the herbal or “natural” remedy lobby.

Rendered into liquid form, however, extracts of cat’s claw have been found to have potent adaptogenic, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties, and these are therefore used by herbal therapists to tackle a wide variety of common ailments. The anti-inflammatory qualities of the herb indicate potential benefits in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatism and bursitis; as well as digestive problems and ulcers, whilst as an adaptogen and anti-oxidant cat’s claw is believed to boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and cholesterol and even help in the fight against cancer.

Serious research into the benefits of cat’s claw has been underway in Europe since the 1970s, and although, as noted above, conventional medicine remains reluctant to confirm the herb’s therapeutic value, the fact that cat’s claw is only available on prescription in certain countries is a clear indication of its biochemical potency.

Cat’s claw’s power as an immune system booster appears to be related to unique properties in the alkaloids derived from it, certain of which appear directly to enhance the ability of the body’s white blood cells to destroy potentially harmful foreign matter. These alkaloids also seem to stimulate the production of the vital T4 lymphocyte and leucocyte immune system cells which are crucial in fighting viral infections.

One particular such alkaloid, rynchophylline, is also believed to be of great benefit to the cardio-vascular system in preventing blood “stickiness”, or the potentially catastrophic formation of clots in circulating blood in the heart and brain. Like other anti-oxidants, cat’s claw may also help to prevent the oxidation of low density lipids (LDL), or “bad cholesterol”, and the consequent build up of deposits inside the arteries leading to atherosclerosis. Recent research also suggests that the anti-oxidant action of cat’s claw may also help to prevent the deposit of the plaques within brain tissue which are implicated in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

The many potential benefits of cat’s claw make it a hugely exciting prospect for advocates of herbal remedies. But there is an important caveat in that most of the research so far has been conducted in the laboratory rather than on live human subjects. Against that, however, must be set the many centuries of use of the herb amongst older civilisations.

Orthodox medicine, moreover, is always keen to stress, quite correctly, that the mere fact that a remedy is described as “natural” or “herbal” does not mean it is necessarily free of potential side effects. Herbal remedies, after all, often provide the raw materials for the manufacture of conventional drugs, and are highly active biochemical compounds in their own right. They could not be of any benefit if they were not.
But in the case of cat’s claw the only contraindications for its use appear to for pregnant women and those suffering from disorders of the immune system. For all others, the herb appears to be completely safe, although very rare cases of minor gastric upsets and headaches have been reported.

The inner bark of the plant is the source of cat’s claw’s active alkaloid compounds, but the bark itself is indigestible and poorly absorbed, if at all, by the human digestive system. Fortunately, however, cat’s claw is now readily available in the form of easily absorbed teas, tinctures and capsules, but it’s probably best to start with low doses to ensure freedom from any possible side effects.

And as recommended therapeutic doses vary between 750 and 3,000 mg per day, it’s always worth talking things over with your physician or a reputable herbal practitioner before beginning any program of supplementation. But the potential benefits of cat’s claw appear so promising that this is not a herb you should ignore.

Not Getting What You Want When YOU Want It

Are you one of those people who takes everything for granted? You know, that you'll always have a roof over your head, a full stomach, clothes to wear and money in the bank? Perhaps you take your looks for granted or your relationship or even your very life?

Taking the question a step further: are you one of those people who expects everything to go your way? That you're entitled to have all of - and only - the very best in life? Are your prayers focused solely on what you want in life?

Are you one of those people who becomes easily disappointed and angry with God when things don't turn out the way that you want them to? Do you question why that other person has what you want but do not have?

Have you ever thought about why it is that your plans haven't worked out the way you planned?

Although many of the mysteries of life will remain elusive, there is always a reason for everything - including for what we do and don't receive.

When plans don't work out, many folks wonder if they made a mistake somewhere, even agonizing over what they could have done differently.

But it rarely occurs to anyone that perhaps they want something that is bad for them.

For example, imagine a child sees someone eating a large chocolate sundae covered with whipped cream. The child tells his parents to buy a sundae for him, too. A sundae that is even larger than the one this other person is eating. But the child's parents refuse to do as he asks. So he falls down and throws a tantrum and through his sobs tells his parents why he wants the sundae. His parents look upon him with sadness and pain, yet they still refuse to buy him the sundae.

Years later the boy realizes that chocolate sundaes are made with ingredients that can make him deathly sick. Then he looks back upon his childhood tantrum with a new respect and reverence for his parents and a deep gratitude that they refused his selfish cries. His parents knew something that he did not know at the time, and their refusal to give into their son's childish pleas saved his life.

So may it be with certain things that you want.

God always sees the big picture. He knows every detail, even the most minute ones. He knows what we need is more important than what we want. His refusal to give a yes to certain things that we want is because His refusal is saving our life.

Of course, there are other reasons, too. It isn't that you won't get that certain thing that you want, but that it isn't yet time to receive it. Again, God knows everything and He works out all things according to His plan.

So, when you ask for anything, always approach God with humility. We are not entitled to any good thing. God gives us all things according to His will. When we seek Him with humility, asking that what we want should be in accordance with what He wants, then by the grace of the Holy Spirit we may receive it.

Put another way, in humility, wait upon the Lord. He knows what to ask the Father on our behalf. When we are right with God, then He will give us what we ask of Him. Always always wait on God.
