Kayem Foods Inc. Announces Chicken Sausage Products Recall Due To Misbranding

by

Joseph

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Kayem Foods Inc., an establishment in Chelsea, MA is recalling approximately 22,182 pounds of chicken sausage products due to misbranding.

The FSIS has designated this a Class II Recall of Low Health Risk.

The following product is subject to recall:

  • 12-oz. vacuum-packed packages containing “al fresco SWEET APPLE CHICKEN SAUSAGE” bearing identification code “308 BW12 USE/FRZ BY FEB 7, 2016.”

According to the USDA, the recalled chicken sausage product was produced on November 4, 2015.

The chicken sausage items subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. P-7839” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The recalled items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The USDA says the products bear incorrect nutrition information and are encased in pork casings which were not declared on the product label. The agency says this could lead to allergic reactions in people who are allergic to pork proteins.

According to the USDA, Kayem Foods Inc. received consumer complaints that the product listed nutritional information for a different product, “al fresco Apple Maple Breakfast” sausages, thus alerting the firm about the problem.

The USDA says there haven't been any reports of adverse reactions due to eating the chicken sausage products. The USDA suggests that anyone with concern should contact a healthcare professional.

Kayem Foods Inc. says that consumers with questions about the recall can contact Brenda Navaroli, Customer Service Manager, at 1-(800) 426-6100 FREE.

God molds us into the men and women that He wants, this is done through our daily trials and tribulations, our happiness and our sorrow. When the work is done, we shall be perfect in the eyes of God. Accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour and allow Him to make you into a new creature called to His purpose for God is GOD.

If Your Doctor Wants to do a Colposcopy

by

Heather MacGibbon

"Hi! We need to you come in for some tests."

No women wants to get that call from your OBGYN, However it is not always as scary as you might think. It you do get a call from your doctor after your pap smear and they suggest a Colposcopy don't be afraid.

What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is a test where you OBGYN uses a special magnifying glass and light, a colposcope, to look directly at the vulva, vagina and cervix. This allows the doctor to see cellular changes which may be causing the pap smear test to come back abnormal.

Many abnormal Pap tests are caused by viral infections, such as HPV infection, or other types of infection like bacteria, fungi (yeast), or protozoa (Trichomonas). Abnormal pap test can also be the result of natural cervical cell changes (atrophic vaginitis) related to menopause. In some cases, untreated cervical cell changes that cause abnormal Pap tests may progress to precancerous or cancerous changes. The colposcopy will help determine if you need treatment and if so what kind of treatment will be most affective.

How is it done?

Step One: Pre-Colposcopy instructions. You will be told by the doctor or nurse that for the few days before the exam to avoid vaginal intercourse. This is because seamen which stay in the body for up to 72 hours can interfere with the doctor's ability to visualize the cervical cells. Also, if you start your period right before you are supposed to have a colposcopy it is important to call you doctor and reschedule. Menstrual bleeding will also have the same effect.

Step Two: The appointment. The day of your appointment you will sign in and get ready in the exam room just like you are having another pap smear. You will disrobe from the waist down and put on a drape.

Once you have your feet in the stirrups and are in position the doctor will insert a speculum - the curved instrument that holds the vaginal walls apart so that they doctor can see you cervix. This is exactly the same as a regular pelvic exam. Then the doctor will use a vinegar (acetic acid) or iodine (Lugol's Solution) to make any areas of abnormal cells more visible to the eye and for the camera if the doctor has attached the camera to the colposcope.

Step Three: Abnormal Cell Biopsy. In some cases the doctor will look through the colposcope and see that there is really no problem. This means that the abnormality on the pap smear was not serious but they may recommend that you have your pap smears at more frequent intervals like every 6 months rather then a year. This will be determined by you doctor based on what is seen and your medical history.

However, if visible abnormalities look significant then your doctor may take small tissue samples directly from the abnormal areas they see. This is called a Biopsy. This can pinch and cause some discomfort - but it is important for proper diagnosis. If a biopsy is done there may be a little bleeding. A special solution (Monsel's Liquid) or a nitrate swab may be used to stop the bleeding. If a sample is needed from inside the cervical opening then an endocervical curette will be used to take a sample of tissue from this area. Again this may cause cramping or discomfort - but it only lasts a minute.

Usually this procedure lasts about 15 minutes.

Step Four: Aftercare

After the colposcopy you will probably feel fine. However if you had a biopsy, you may have some vaginal soreness for a day or two. A little bleeding or discharge is normal for up to a week after a biopsy. It also may be dark in color because of the solutions used during the biopsy. Use a sanitary pads for the bleeding. Do not douche, have sex, or use tampons for one week, to allow time for your cervix to heal and avoid exercise for one day after your colposcopy.

Follow any extra instructions your doctor gives you and Call your doctor if you have:

Heavy vaginal bleeding (more than a normal menstrual period).
A fever.
Belly pain.
Bad-smelling vaginal discharge.

Although colposcopy and cervical biopsy are very safe, there are always small risks of infection or bleeding so be aware of how you feel and any symptoms.

The Results - In the best case the doctor will not see any areas of abnormal cells during you test and you will not have to receive treatment.

The abnormalities seen during the test sores, genital warts or an infection, may be found in or around the vagina or cervix. If this is the case your doctor may prescribe medicine for you or other course of treatment.

If precancerous or cancerous cells are detected then you may need further procedures to remove these cells so that they do not spread causing more serious health issues.

Slowly Chew Your Food If You Want To Lose Weight

by

Joseph

According to a study published in Pediatric Obesity, teens who slowly chewed their food tended to weigh less than adolescents who ate quickly. This study gives remarkable insight into how rate of food consumption over time can affect body mass.

American and Mexican research scientists investigated the effects rate of eating would have on adolescent body weight. The research team selected 54 healthy weight boys and girls whom were provided with a 30 second portable hour glass and recommendations for reducing their eating rate without making changes to their diet or meal size. The 30 second portable hour glass was to be used to pace the amount of time between bites. Some of the participants used the hour glass, others did not and were placed into an adhering group or non-adhering group.

Scientists spent 1 year studying the impact that eating slowly would have on the participants' body weight. By the time the experiment was over, 32 students had completed the study. These adolescents provided the research team with very remarkable information about what happens to body weight based on the speed at which people eat their food.

At the beginning of the experiment, teens who ate their food slowly tended to be heavier but over time, things began to change. After one semester, on average, students who adhered to the slow eating recommendations lost 2 to 5.7 % of body weight, after one full year these participants lost 3.4 to 4.8% of body weight.

But adolescents who did not adhere to the recommendations gained weight over time; after one semester these young people gained an average of 4.5 to 5.8 % of their body weight. After one year the non-adhering group had gained an average of 8.3 to 12.6 % of their body weight.

The adhering group (14 participants by the end of the study) and non-adhering group (18 participants by the end of the study) were compared to a control group who increased their body weight by an average 6.5 to 8.2 % after one year of participation in the study.

Based on the observed results, the research team concluded that 1 year adherence to an educational program geared toward development of healthy eating habits could be useful for managing body weight.

Although the sample size was very small, the take away lesson is very huge. People tend to gain weight when they rush through meals. This is because they are not allowing their minds to focus on their meal. The brain needs time to process the data it receives from other parts of the body.

The satiety (fullness) mechanism won't have time to kick in if a person is gulping down their meal. When that happens, the fast eater will continue eating because he or she feels hungry even when they've exceeded the amount of calories required to maintain a certain weight. If they continue eating like this, they'll gain weight eventually.

Lead investigator B. Y. Salazar Vázquez recommends that food pacing be used as a means to teach young people how to manage their body weight. Perhaps that's something people of all ages could benefit from.

Each of us has something we can contribute to the Kingdom of God; may we remember this as go through life. Give honor and glory to God and love all as if they are us, because Jesus loved us so much that He died so that we may live.

The Ultimate Winter Sports Workout

The Ultimate Winter Sports Workout

Submitted by: Sandra Prior

Peak performance for any sport or training regime in the cold requires muscles strong in three dimensions. But most men train their muscles in only one direction. That means they're not reaching their potential. This workout trains your muscles from every angle, speeding growth and improving stability. These may be the best exercises that no one's doing.

Directions

Do this workout two or three times a week. For exercise one, complete as many reps as you can in 20 seconds. Rest 60 seconds; repeat once. Then move on to exercise 2A. Do exercises 2A and 2B as a superset, performing one set of each exercise before resting 90 seconds. Complete two to three sets of eight reps for each. Then move on to exercise 3A. Do exercises 3A and 3B as a superset, performing one set of each exercise before resting for 90 seconds. Complete a total of two to three sets of 12 to 15 repetitions for each.

1. Mogul Jump

Holding a medicine ball between your thighs, stand with your feet and lower body facing two o'clock and your upper body turned straight ahead. Dip your knees until they're bent about 60 degrees. Jump and twist your lower body to the left so your hips and knees are now pointing at 10 o'clock while your upper body is still facing straight ahead. That's one rep. Repeat until you complete all your reps.

2A. Lateral Lunge and Press

Grab dumbbells and stand with your feet hip-width apart. Press the dumbbells overhead, arms straight. Then step 60cm to your left and lower your body until your left thigh is parallel to the floor while you lower the left dumbbell to shoulder height. (Do this in one move, keeping your torso as upright as you can.) Drive your body back to the starting position. Repeat, this time stepping to the right.

2B. Side Plank (With Reach Under)

Lie on your right side, knees straight. Prop your upper body up on your right elbow and forearm, which should be directly below your right shoulder. Raise your hips so your body forms a straight line. Contract and brace your abs. (Imagine you're about to take a punch in the gut.) With your left hand, reach under your torso and behind you. Then straighten your left arm above you. Do eight reps and switch sides.

3A. Lateral Step-Up

Grab a pair of dumbbells and stand with your left side next to a gym bench. Place your left foot on the bench. That's the starting position. Press your left foot into the bench and push your body up until both legs are straight. Slowly lower back to the starting position, making sure that your right foot is parallel to and lined up with your left foot when you touch back down. Complete all reps and switch sides.

3B. Stability Ball Jack-Knife

Assume a push-up position with your shins on a stability ball. Your arms should be straight and your back flat; your body should form a straight line. Roll the ball towards your chest by raising your hips as high as you can and rounding your back as you pull the ball forwards with your feet. Pause, then return the ball by lowering your hips and rolling it backwards. If that's too easy, perform a push-up between reps.

Training Tip

Drink a cup of chocolate milk as soon as you put that last dumbbell back on the weight rack. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found the cheap, tasty concoction was more effective than expensive carbohydrate sports drinks as a form of post-workout nutrition. Consider it your muscle-building smoothie for winter.

Waist-Watching? Add Soup, Whole Grains and Citrus

Waist-Watching? Add Soup, Whole Grains and Citrus

Submitted by: Michelle Stewart

As we start the New Year, I've had a ton of questions from my clients focusing on their interest in giving a jumpstart to their healthy lifestyle goals. I've had questions on the Green cleanse, shapely shakes, citrus cleanse, green tea diet, food lovers cleanse, and more. My response to those inquiries is consistent with my mantra-"for better health all things in moderation; there is not one food that is all good or all bad for you."

Now there are some food choices that can aid you in moving forward on the path to a healthier you. Take soup for instance-research published in the Journal Appetite showed that people who started lunch with vegetable soup ended up eating 20 percent less than those who skipped the soup. Now the key to adding soup to your meal plan is to choose one that is broth-based, is low energy density which provides fewer calories per gram than other foods, and contains low to moderate amounts of sodium. Soup contributes to a feeling of fullness or satiety so by starting a meal with soup, it can prevent you from overeating.

Whole grain foods are also excellent choices for the healthy lifestyle. They are higher in fiber and high fiber intake can be helpful in weight management and weight loss. Whole grains have been around, but the "on-trend" group in the whole grain family falls under the moniker of ancient grains. These are grains such as s farro, quinoa and sorghum, to name a few.

Farro is often labeled the "mother of all wheat species." The grain is highly regarded in Italy and fast becoming one of the popular grains on the on-trend list in this country. Whole grain farro is high in fiber, protein, vitamin B3 and zinc. It is low in gluten.

Quinoa is technically a gluten-free seed, however in cooking it is used as a grain. It is high in protein, iron and fiber.

Sorghum is a substitute for wheat, is gluten-free and also high in protein, iron and fiber as well as a rich source of antioxidants.

Citrus fruits are also good options to include as you make steps to improve your well-being. These fruits have high fiber, high water content and fewer calories per gram. These attributes will give you a greater feeling of fullness, helping to suppress your appetite. Research indicates that eating a half grapefruit before meals can promote weight loss. In addition to waist-trimming qualities, grapefruit contains immune-boosting vitamins A and C and antioxidants. However if you are taking prescription medication, make sure you check with your health care professional before making grapefruit part of your daily meal plan.

These food tips can help you tip the scale to your benefit. Include soup, whole grains, and citrus fruits along with green leafy vegetables, lean meats such as fish, turkey or chicken, low fat dairy products and plenty of water in your daily meal plan. These food choices will allow you to eat moderate amounts, and enjoy a treat here and there as you continue toward the well-being lifestyle.

Take Away: You can enjoy a variety of foods eaten in moderation; add 30 minutes of physical activity and you'll have a head start toward your goals.

Developing a Lean Body For Life the Natural Way

Developing a Lean Body For Life the Natural Way

Submitted by: Kya Grace

Ever wanted those perfectly chiseled abs, firm legs and toned arms that you always see your favorite movie stars flaunting? Well it is a lot easier than you thought it was; these simple 7 steps should get you on your way to a lean body in just about a month.

1. Cardiovascular Training/Aerobic exercise
Cardiovascular/Aerobic exercise is nothing but any form of exercise that stresses on your body’s larger muscles, like your leg. Do not go by the difference in name, they are essentially the same set of exercises. Cardiovascular exercises increase the flow of oxygen to your muscles and this is one of the key factors that play a role in developing a lean body. An individual seeking cardiovascular training has two options – Outdoor and Indoor.

Outdoor cardiovascular exercises include jogging, bicycling, jump-roping, swimming etc., and indoor exercises include treadmills, stair climbers, stationary bicycles etc. A word of caution – intense cardiovascular training can backfire on you by making you lose lean muscle mass and eventually your metabolic rate too. It is always advisable to consult a doctor or a personal trainer regarding the intensity of training would be apt for you as this differs from person to person.

2. Control Food Intake
While major credit to a lean body goes to cardiovascular exercise, its effectiveness is determined by the diet which supports it. By diet, one does not literally refer to ‘dieting’, in fact it is not advisable at all. You need an average of at least 1600 calories to 2400 calories in food intake which varies according to your age and gender. This should be spread over the course of the day in five mini-meals. This not only keeps your digestion level at optimum but also reduces the chances of food craving that may occur.

3. Nutrition watch
An ideal diet should include 25-30 percent protein, 55-60 percent carbohydrates, and 15-20 percent fat. Protein is an important aspect of your nutrition watch as it is the nutrient most needed carry out cardiovascular activities. A study at University of Western Ontario found that by replacing calories from other nutrients with proteins one could drastically reduce blood cholesterol. You must also make sure you get a regular intake of vitamin B6, vitamin B12, magnesium, potassium, chromium, selenium, and zinc as they play a very important role is burning fat and building muscles.

4. Maintain water level in the body
We all know that water comprises 70% of our body. Unless the body is hydrated it cannot effectively convert fats into carbohydrates and eventually energy. It is advisable to consume at least eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (which is about 1.8 liters) a day to maintain a healthy water level.

5. Keep a watch
By using a body fat scale or analyzer you can track how much unwanted fat you are burning. To lose about 1 pound of fat you need to either create a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories or increase you calorie burning by 500 calories a day for one week. Make sure that you monitor yourself not just to track your progress but also to make sure that you don’t overdo it.

6. Decrease tension
One of the most important aspects of developing a lean body is that it does not happen overnight. It takes a good while for results to show. Don’t get tensed if nothing happens, increase in tension makes people over work which in turn reduces testosterone levels significantly.

7. Maintain a balanced lifestyle
Appropriate diet is just one side of the coin, but the other side is a healthy lifestyle. Keep in mind that an adult body needs minimum 8-9 hours of sleep daily. Avoid alcoholic drinks as much as possible, a drink or two once a week is fine. Completely refrain from junk food like fries and soda.
