The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that Haring Catfish, Inc., an establishment in Wisner, Louisiana is recalling approximately 21,521pounds of siluriformes fish (catfish) products that may be adulterated with a residue that is of concern to public health, specifically gentian (crystal) violet.

The FSIS has designated this a Class II Recall of Low Health Risk.

The products subject to recall are:

• 11-lb. Cardboard boxes of ice packed “catfish” tails in plastic wrapping identified as HARING CATFISH and having Lot Code 2140 printed on the label.
• 15-lb. Cardboard boxes of IQF (Individually Quick Frozen) “catfish” steaks, filets, irregular filets, whole fish, strips and nuggets in plastic wrapping identified as HARING CATFISH and having Lot Code 2140 printed on the label.
• 30-lb. Cardboard boxes of ice packed “catfish” steaks, filets, irregular filets, whole fish, strips, nuggets, and gutted fish in plastic wrapping identified as HARING CATFISH and having Lot Code 2140 printed on the label.

The catfish products items were produced on June 28 and 29, 2016 and bear establishment number “EST. 51217” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

The products were shipped to hotels, institutions, retail locations and restaurants in the following states:

• California
• Oklahoma
• Louisiana
• Arkansas
• Mississippi
• Texas

According to the USDA, the problem was discovered on July 11 after routine sampling results by the FSIS revealed a "volatile level" of the chemical gentian (crystal) violet in the catfish product.

The USDA said there have been no confirmed reports of injury or illness due to eating the recalled products. They suggest that anyone with concerns about illness or injury should contact a health care provider. They also urge consumers not to eat the recalled items, but to throw the products away or return the products to the place of purchase for a refund.
