Barbell Floor Press Challenge Week 25



I did not do any barbell floor presses this week. I did the farmer's walk, one arm dumbbell rows, inclined pushups, seated machine chest press and the horizontal cable row, assuming that I would allow my muscles to rest and hit them next time I returned to the gym; but I only got in one workout this past week.

When I return to the gym I'll be going for 300 lbx3x3.  I'll keep you posted.

Bird spotting is the ultimate hobby. All you need are a good pair of eyes and a good pair of binoculars (and even the latter is not always necessary). Birds are all around us, and even if you don't notice them at first, once you start looking you will see them everywhere. This makes bird spotting the perfect hobby to take up if you are involved in delivery work.

The Ideal Bird Spotting Job

When carrying out delivery work, you have the perfect opportunity to start bird spotting. You're driving through the country and cities all day, constantly entering new areas and different environments. You are regularly seeing new places and new sights, and you can visit more areas in one day than most people visit in a month. That provides you with plenty of opportunities to keep an eye out for different bird species.

Whether you're driving along a country lane, stopping at a motorway service station or stuck in a traffic jam in the city, there is always an opportunity to keep an eye out for birds in the sky and the trees above on delivery work.

Getting Started

So how do you get started with bird spotting whilst on delivery work? If you're interested in becoming a 'twitcher' then the best place to start is to buy a good book. There are literally hundreds of books available on starting out in bird spotting or, if you'd prefer, just check on the internet and you'll find plenty of resources.

Using a book of all the different birds that are found in the country, get yourself familiar with a few of them, perhaps by heading to your local park or sitting in your garden, or even just looking out your window. Once you become familiar with their appearance and how they fly through the air, you'll soon be able to recognise them at a distance or when they are moving fast. This is perfect for when you are on delivery jobs and you manage to catch a blur of movement out of the corner of your eye.

An Addictive Hobby

Start to tick off the birds that you see whilst carrying out delivery work, and you'll soon find that it becomes quite an addiction. Just make sure that it doesn't distract you from your job and you'll have instantly found something to keep you entertained no matter how long you spend on the road.

Opportunities Abroad

If you go abroad on delivery work then things will start to get really exciting. Driving to other countries in Europe will present you with lots more opportunities to spot new species of birds. But even if you stay doing delivery jobs in your local area, you will get plenty of satisfaction from bird spotting.

Join an Organisation

To get even more from your hobby, why not join an organisation like the RSPB? This will allow you to meet other like-minded people and share what you know about birds. You'll probably find yourself the envy of the group with the amount of time you get to spend enjoying your hobby whilst you are carrying out delivery work.

PLACE OF SALT AND SMOKED FISH IN THE DIET.--In regions where fresh fish cannot be obtained or in seasons when they are scarce everywhere, the housewife will do well to use salt and smoked fish. These varieties of fish not only will give her a chance to vary the diet, but will enable her to provide at a more economical price, food that, pound for pound, contains more nutriment than the same fish when fresh. While some of the varieties of smoked and salt fish may not be obtainable in all communities, the housewife will do much toward bringing the supply to her community by requesting them from the dealer. When a dealer knows that there is a demand for certain kinds, he will make an effort to secure the varieties wanted.

FRESHENING SALT AND SMOKED FISH.--The cooking of salt and smoked fish is not a difficult matter, but it always involves the freshening of the fish before any cooking method can be applied. This consists in placing the fish in a large quantity of water and allowing it to stand until enough of the salt has been extracted to suit the taste. Some kinds of fish are so salty that they require considerable soaking, whereas others require only a little freshening. However, it is usually advisable to change the water several times. If it is desired to hasten the extraction of the salt, the fish should be raised above the bottom of the vessel by means of a wire rack or several clean sticks. In the case of very thick fish, several gashes may be cut into the flesh to permit the salt to pass out more readily.

CREAMED CODFISH.--Since codfish is a rather dry fish, containing little fat, it is usually combined with some other food to make it more appetizing. In the case of creamed codfish, the cream sauce supplies the food substances in which the fish is lacking and at the same time provides a very palatable dish. When codfish is prepared in this way, boiled potatoes are usually served with it.

To make creamed codfish, freshen the required amount of codfish by pouring lukewarm water over it. Shred the fish by breaking it into small pieces with the fingers. Pour off the water, add fresh warm water, and allow the fish to stand until it is not too salty. When it is sufficiently freshened, drain off all the water. Melt a little butter in a frying pan, add the fish, and saute until slightly browned. Make a medium white sauce and pour it over the codfish. Serve hot with boiled potatoes.

CODFISH BALLS.--Another excellent way in which to serve codfish is to combine it with mashed potatoes, make these into balls, and fry them in deep fat. These give variety to meals and also afford an opportunity to serve a nutritious food.

Freshen the codfish as explained in Art. 61, and then mince it very fine. Add an equal amount of freshly cooked hot potato that has been put through a potato ricer or mashed fine. Mix thoroughly and, if necessary, season with salt and pepper. Shape into balls and fry in deep fat. Drain well and serve hot.

SAUTED SALT MACKEREL.--When an extremely tasty dish that will afford a change from the usual daily routine of meals is desired, sauted salt mackerel will be found very satisfactory.

Freshen salt mackerel that is to be sauted by putting it into a saucepan and covering it with cold water. Place this over the fire, and allow the water to heat to almost the boiling point. Pour off the water, and saute the fish in butter or other fat until nicely browned. If desired, pour a small amount of thin cream over the mackerel just before removing it from the pan, allow this to heat, and serve it as a sauce with the mackerel.

BAKED FINNAN HADDIE.--When haddock is cured by smoking, it is known as finnan haddie. As fish of this kind has considerable thick flesh, it is very good for baking. Other methods of cookery may, of course, be applied to it, but none is more satisfactory than baking.

To bake a finnan haddie, wash it in warm water and put it to soak in fresh warm water. After it has soaked for 1/2 hour, allow it to come gradually to nearly the boiling point and then pour off the water. Place the fish in a baking pan, add a piece of butter, sprinkle with pepper, and pour a little water over it. Bake in a hot oven until it is nicely browned. Serve hot.

CREAMED FINNAN HADDIE.--The flavor of finnan haddie is such that this fish becomes very appetizing when prepared with a cream sauce. If, after combining the sauce with the fish, the fish is baked in the oven, an especially palatable dish is the result.

To prepare creamed finnan haddie, freshen the fish and shred it into small pieces. Then measure the fish, put it into a baking dish, and pour an equal amount of white sauce over it. Sprinkle generously with crumbs and bake in a hot oven until the crumbs are browned. Serve hot.

BOILED SALMON.--When smoked salmon can be secured, it makes a splendid fish for boiling. If it is cooked until tender and then served with a well-seasoned sauce, it will find favor with most persons.

Freshen smoked salmon in warm water as much as seems necessary, remembering that the cooking to which it will be subjected will remove a large amount of the superfluous salt. Cover the salmon with hot water, and simmer slowly until it becomes tender. Remove from the water, pour a little melted butter over it, and serve with any desired sauce.

It�s important to remember that fruit and vegetable consumption may also be an index that reflects differences between individuals who do or do not eat healthily, rather than having an exclusively protective role against cancer.

Not sure what that means? Well, chances are if you�re eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, you�re also probably the kind of person who doesn�t smoke, drink in excess and exercises regularly. So it could mean that your whole lifestyle offers protection against disease, rather than the fruit and vegetables being solely responsible for your good health.

But until we have evidence to the contrary, it seems we should stick to mom�s advice and eat at least five servings of fruit and vegetables a day.

How to Prevent Clogged Drains

It can often be a good idea to get everything maintained every few years in order to protect your home from bigger problems. But before you call in the expert, there are a few things that you can try at home to get rid of the clogging.

While dealing with a drain located in a sink, a combination of hot water and dish detergent is the most effective. Pour the hot water into the drain and put in a little detergent. After allowing it to settle for a little bit, get a plunger and try plunging it to get rid of the gunk. If it doesn't work the first time, repeat the process. For a blocked toilet, try using a flange plunger. Avoid using strong chemical cleaners because these could affect the pipes.

The best way to prevent the sink from getting blocked is by keeping a few extra plastic bags on hand so that any larger amount of oil and grease can be put into them instead of pouring them down the drain. By putting them in the bag, you can seal it and throw it out with the rest of your garbage, thus protecting your sink in the process.

There area many common sense rules to follow when caring for your cat. These rules are simple and will ensure your cat will be healthy and happy.

  1. When your cat arrives at home:
    Bringing your new cat home can be frightening for it. Be prepared by having a food and water spot already set up. Also have a litter box setup in a quite spot away from the food. Your new cat should be transported in a cat carrier. When you bring the cat inside set the carrier down and open the door. Let the cat come out and explore on its own. Confining the cat to a quiet room for a day or two will make the experience less overwhelming.


  2. Going Outside:
    Before letting your cat outside for the first time be sure it is comfortable with you and its indoor surroundings. There are many dangers outside so let your cat have an escape route in case it needs it. My cat uses a cat door and it has save him a few times.

    Judge the risk to letting your cat outdoors. If you live close to lots of traffic having an outdoor cat may not be a good idea.


  3. Litter Boxes:
    If you are using a cat box it should be cleaned daily. Clumping cat litter makes this easy. Simply scoop out the clumps and you're done. Put the litter box in a place where the cat will not be disturbed.


  4. Food and water:
    Your cat should always have a supply of fresh food and water. I prefer to use a heavy ceramic bowl to prevent the cat from pushing it or tipping them over.

    The water bowl should be changed daily and food should be added to maintain a good supply.

    My cat is now on a high quality dry food. I found feeding him can food was a waste. He generally left some behind at each meal regardless of the portion. At 15 I weaned him onto dry food only.


  5. Scratching Posts:
    Any cat is going to have the urge to scratch. The question is where is it going to do it? Best to have a scratching post that is safe and secure. Play with your cat on the post so it gets used to being allowed to scratch there. Rubbing a bit of cat nip on the scratching post will encourage your cat to scratch.


  6. Cat Toys:
    There are so many different cat toys on the market these days it is hard to choose a toy your cat will like. After much trial and error I determined my cat likes the string attached to the toy much better then the toy. Whenever I want to play I get a string, or better yet, my gold necklace (his favorite).


  7. Sleeping Places:
    A cat always needs a quiet, out of the way place to sleep the day away. A bed near a heater or furnace vent is ideal. In the winter most of the vents in my house have a cat bed near them. If you have small children make sure they can't disturb your cat when it sleeps


  8. Care for eyes and ears:
    When cats get a build up of discharge around the eye simply clean it with a damp cloth. A small amount of discharge is normal for a healthy cat but if there are excessive amount then consult a vet.

    Regularly check your cats ears for dirt or ear mites. Any dirt can be removed with a damp Q-tip. If you spot small brown clumps of discharge you should consult your vet. This is a sign of ear mites.


  9. Care for the claws:
    If you have an outside cat, claw care is less important. Climbing trees, and other outdoor stuff helps to keep claws well maintained.

    An inside cat has far less need for its claws. There is really no environment where your cat needs to use its claws. You should trim your cats claws once or twice a year. Clip the very tip of each claw. Taking any more then just the tip can hurt your cat. It is recommended that you have a vet show you how to clip their claws properly.


  10. Care of the mouth and teeth:
    As cats age their teeth start to get calcium build up which can cause gum inflammation. Check your cats mouth every 6 or 8 weeks. Find and remove and calcium build up before deposits get too large.

Caring for a cat is quite simple, common sense really. I believe that good food, fresh water, lots of love and exercise is best for a cat. By following these 10 simple guidelines your cat can live a long and healthy life.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a great shot of your item worth? More than you may think, especially if you're depending on your photos to help sell your items.

Good quality product photographs can often mean the difference between an acceptance offer and a rejection notice, sale or no sale, etc...

When you are selling your handcrafted products through websites, auctions and catalogs, you are depending on the photographs of your item to help grab the buyers attention. Your photos need to sizzle.

Professional product photos are the best idea if you can afford it, but they can be expensive if you offer several handcrafted pieces. Don't worry. If you are operating on a shoestring budget, we've got you covered.

We do not want our photos to scream "Amateur". Taking pictures on the kitchen table with our salt & pepper shakers in the background is off limits. Your floor is also out of the question.

There's no need to get upset. We are going to set up a simple inexpensive tabletop studio together. You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your product photos.

The first thing we need to discuss is lighting. Make no mistake, the correct lighting is a major player. Without it, you're shooting blanks. Soft lighting will set the stage for your handcrafted creations. How can you tell the difference between soft and harsh lighting? Simple. Hold your hand out. Now look down at the shadow. The softer the shadow, the softer the light. A distinct dark shadow equals harsh light.

I like to keep things simple. I opt to do lighting the easy way. Whenever possible, I use natural lighting, i.e. the sun, vs. artificial light. I have found that the best lighting to take photographs with is provided by an overcast sky.

Now that we've discovered a handy use for the next cloudy day, let's move on to setting up your tabletop studio. You will need a small table, poster board or oversized matte board and something to hang your poster board from that stands a couple of feet higher than your table. I use a very inexpensive rack that you hang clothes on. You can find them at almost any discount store usually near the ironing boards and hangers.

Set up your table. Our next objective is to set up the background. This is where the matte board comes in. You can find matte boards at most hobby stores. They are oversized and come in a variety of colors. In a pinch, you can even use regular poster board.

We do not want to use any color or pattern that is too busy. When someone looks at your photos, their eyes should immediately be drawn to your marvelous item and not to the background.

Stand your matte board straight up on the table. Now let your board slide about halfway down on the top of the table. In comes the clothes rack. Hang the matte board from the clothes rack using small clamps. Adjust the height of the rack so that your matte board is lying partially on the table. Visit for step by step photos of how your tabletop studio should look.

Ta Da! You now have an inexpensive yet effective tabletop studio. Place your product on the matte board and get ready for your own personal photo shoot.

Once your tabletop studio is set up and your lighting is correct, you will need to set up the photo. Disable the flash on your camera and mount the camera to a tripod. Always use a tripod. Even an inexpensive tripod from your local discount store will make a huge difference.

Place your handcrafted product on the tabletop. Look for interesting photography angles. You can shoot from above or maybe angle in from the side or corner.

One additional tip: when shooting with a white or light background, cameras tend to underexpose the photograph. You can compensate for this by adjusting the "Exposure Value" in the manual settings of your camera. The camera is normally set to 0. Start by adjusting to +1.0 and go from there.

Take lots of pictures. Experiment. Fill your photos with the product. Use different angles and play with the lighting. Get your creative juices flowing and you will be on your way to taking photos that make your product pop off the page at your buyers!

These tips are not meant to replace professional product photography. You have spent a lot of time getting your handcrafted items perfect. Whenever you are ready, I would recommend having your products professionally photographed.

300 pounds. Yes, THREE HUNDRED pounds on the barbell floor press. I did it. Actually, my one rep max is 309 pounds, so I can go higher than I did last week and today. By going three hundred pounds, I overcame a mental block that had been holding me back. 

I used dumbbells when doing overhead press and hold because the gym does not have any free Olympic bars, but this can be advantageous in that both arms must do equal work to keep the weights above my head. I also did the horizontal cable row just to round out today's exercise. I had a very good workout this week.

I'll do the barbell floor press at 300lb x3x1 the next time I get to the gym. I'll keep you posted.

Going Bird Watching In LA

Some of you might think that it is impossible to do some bird watching in Los Angeles or in any other city. But there are places that you can visit making it possible for you to enjoy this hobby.

The first is the Arboretum of Los Angeles County. This is a 127 acre garden that is blooming with plant and tree life making it a perfect location for some birds to live on. Here, you will get to see 200 peafowl birds that were imported from India and some peacocks.

Another place is the Los Angeles Oiled Bird Care and Education Center. This is a 10,000 square foot facility that can accommodate 1,000 birds at a time.

Approximately 40,000 children visit this place every year. Guests will be able to see two large outdoor aviaries that house pelicans. They even have a hospital for birds that have been found and brought in for care by viewing the monitor.

You can also visit the Audubon Center at Debs Park. Considered as one of the greenest buildings in the nation, it houses coyotes and about 138 species of birds.

Of course, one place that you cannot miss to do some bird watching is the Los Angeles Zoo.

Examples of these include the Andean Condor, African Fish Eagle, Chilean Flamingo, Egret, Mandarin Duck, Laughing Kookaburra, plush crested Jay, Military Macaw, Red Knobbed Hornbill, Sacred Ibis, Thick billed parrot, Ostrich, Congo Peacock, Blue Peafowl, Common Rave, Roseate Spoonbill, Black Swan, Inca Tern, Lady Ross'sTuraco, Cape Vulture, Cape Griffon Vulture and a lot more.

But if you want to do some bird watching without paying any entrance or parking fees, drive around the city and you just might see some especially around the UCLA campus that is on the Westwood area of Los Angeles.

You may also find birds in the flood control basins of Los Angeles particularly near the Montebello Hills and near the Hansen Dam. Here you will find Nighthawks, Roadrunners, Costa's Hummingbirds, Cactus Wren and the Loggerhead Shrike.

The Boreal forest is also home to 60 species of birds especially during the migrating season and during the winter. You could see Surf and white winged scoters diving for clams and mussels along Newport Beach or the Golden crowned Sparrow all the way from Canada's Yukon.

If you like bird watching, you can join groups that sponsor trips and training to their fellow members. Some of them are the Los Angeles Audubon Society, the West Los Angeles Bird Club, the Parrot Society of Los Angeles and the Gold Country Bird Society. Meetings are held monthly. You can post questions by emailing them or visiting their website.

When you bird watching by yourself or with a group, make sure you to bring all the equipment you need like a pair of binoculars, a pen, a journal, a hat, backpack and even a digital camera. You could share this information with the other members during the next meeting so you become an active participant not just someone who sits in the back and just listens to what other people have to say.

The places mentioned just goes to show that it is still possible to do some bird watching in Los Angeles even if it is a bustling city. So check these places out and have some fun.

Traditionally, soups are classified into two broad groups: clear soups and thick soups. The established French classifications of clear soups are bouillon and consomm�. Thick soups are classified depending upon the type of thickening agent used: pur�es are vegetable soups thickened with starch; bisques are made from pur�ed shellfish or vegetables thickened with cream; cream soups are thickened with b�chamel sauce; and velout�s are thickened with eggs, butter and cream. Other ingredients commonly used to thicken soups and broths include rice, flour, and grain.

Here are a few soup recipes for you to try -

Bacon And Parsnip Soup

25g butter, (1oz)
1Tbs oil
1 onion, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
250g parsnips, chopped (8oz)
250g cooked gammon or shoulder joint, cubed (8oz)
2quarts vegetable stock
freshly ground black pepper
1Tbs freshly chopped parsley
croutons to serve

1. Heat the butter and oil in a large pan. Add the onion, carrot and parsnip and cook gently for 5-6 minutes.

2. Add the gammon and stock and bring to the boil. Simmer gently for -30 minutes.

3. Puree the soup in a blender until smooth and return to the pan.

4. Add pepper to taste and serve hot with croutons and sprinkled with chopped parsley.

Author Note: A delicious soup using left over gammon and traditional winter vegetables.

Carrot And Orange Soup

2Tbs oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
500g frozen sliced carrots, (16oz)
1 1/4 liters vegetable stock, (2 pints)
juice and zest of 1 orange
salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Heat the oil in a large pan, over a moderate heat fry the onion and carrots until softened, this will take approximately 10-15 minutes.

2. Add the stock and bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove from the heat and pour the soup into a blender along with the juice and zest of the orange. Blend until smooth.

3. Return to the heat, season with salt and pepper and heat through, adding a little water if the consistency looks too thick. Serve with chunks of crusty bread.

Author Note: A lovely combination of flavours, with a zesty backnote of orange.

Curried Parsnip Soup

2 Tbs butter
2 large onions, finely sliced
1Tbs curry paste, (medium madras style)
5 parsnips, peeled and sliced
1 liter chicken stock
one lemon, juice of
4tsp plain yoghurt
1tsp mint sauce
4 poppadums

1. Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the onion and cook until soft. Add the curry paste and cook for five minutes. Then add the parsnips, chicken stock and a seasoning of salt and pepper, bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes.

2. Liquidise and pass through a sieve, return to the pan, add the lemon juice, check seasoning and keep warm.

3. Combine the yoghurt and mint sauce, season and set aside. To servedivide into four four bowls, garnish with the yoghurt and a poppadum.
