Glazing A Double-Pane Window With A Single Pane Of Glass

Glazing A Double-Pane Window With A Single Pane Of Glass
By David Asher

At the glass repair company where I work in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at least once a week we get a call from a business or homeowner with a broken double-pane window who asks us if we can replace it with just a single pane of glass.

Why in the world, you ask, would someone want to replace a double-pane window with a single pane? There are two reasons for this. One is the time factor. Double-pane windows (also referred to as a thermal or insulated windows) have to be custom-ordered and typically take between five and ten working days to be manufactured, whereas installing a single pane into the opening is something that can be done that very same day. The other reason is cost. As one would imagine, a double-pane window is more expensive. After all, a single pane of glass is just that. Conversely, a thermal window, in addition to obviously having two panes of glass, also has quite a bit of technology built into it. And technology isn't cheap. Replacing a large double-pane windows can be a significant expense.

As far as the actual job is concerned, converting a commercial double-pane window to a single pane is a relatively simple matter. For modern storefront glazing (known as "flush-glaze") manufacturers sell a simple converter system that drops into the existing frame and re-configures it to a single-glazing width. Converting a residential window, however, is a different story. Residential frames and sashes are designed to hold a double-pane window (known as a "unit") of a very specific thickness, and due to the proprietary nature of residential windows and no doubt a general lack of demand, there exists no converter system for this task. But that doesn't mean it can't be done. And done well, at that.

On a fairly regular basis I come across a homeowner or, more typically, an apartment dweller who, for one reason or another absolutely insists that they need to have their double-pane window repaired that very same day. It is for these customers I have developed the following method for doing such a repair, the result of which is semi-permanent (it can be easily reversed), and has an air-tight, water-tight seal.

After removing and disassembling the sash, then de-glazing the old thermal unit, a single piece of plate glass with a thickness of 3/16 or 1/4 inch (as opposed to the two pieces of 5/32 inch glass which is usually found in residential thermal windows) is cut to a size that fits snugly into the sash and is laid flat in a continuous bead of silicone on the inside of the exterior side of the frame. 1/16th inch thick neoprene setting blocks are then wedged along the edge of the glass, two per side. These act as a very effective shock absorber between the glass and the sash, and keep the pane from moving in any direction.

Next, a second bead of silicone is laid around the edge of the interior side of the glass. Finally, a number of carefully-sized small wood blocks (typically two or three for each side) are wedged between the interior side of the sash and the glass, forcing the pane snugly up against the exterior side of the sash.At this point the window is then re-installed. After the silicone cures in 72 hours, the customer pulls out the wood blocks and it's done.

I've been doing this type of window repair for almost 15 years and have never had a single call-back or complaint. There are, however, two caveats that must be explained to the customer before I agree to do the job. The first is obvious - that they lose the thermal properties of having a double-pane window. The second is that, while the window will look the same from the outside, there will in fact be a gap of a 1/2 to 3/4 inch inside the sash. After all, if you put a 1/4 piece of glass into an opening that measures 7/8 of an inch, you still have a 5/8 inch difference. As it is, the inside of the sash is the same color as the outside, so the visual difference is negligible.

And there you have it.

Getting Your Puppy To Stop Jumping Up

Getting Your Puppy To Stop Jumping Up
By Jeffrey Kinseth

It's adorable seeing a puppy jump around and play, but the truth is, as your dog grows up, this behavior is going to become rude, agitating, and inappropriate for you and your guests. While they may be cute, small, and harmless right now, your dog will soon grow into a full-sized animal who could easily tear or ruin an outfit along with jumping up on a small child or elderly person and knocking them over or hurting them.

So, it's essential that you put in the effort to teaching your puppy sooner rather than later so they quickly learn that jumping up on a person is not the appropriate response when they see someone.

Before you begin disciplining your dog, remember that jumping is very natural to them, and as puppies especially, they often are "rewarded" for it because they get attention when they jump up. In the wild, they will jump into their mother's face to get attention or encourage food to be given to them. So, one of the quickest ways to train your puppy that jumping won't get them anything positive is to simply ignore the behavior. Turn away from them when they jump and walk away a few steps. Wait a few moments before interacting so they do not associate the interaction with their jumping or begging.

Do not make eye contact, speak to, or touch your dog when they jump on you. All of this can be perceived as affection. Wait until your puppy has calmed down before making any sort of interaction with them. If your puppy is unable to calm down after five minutes, isolate them by leaving the room or leading them to their dog pen and walking away. Wait until they are quiet and calm before letting them out again.

It may be difficult for you to train your puppy due to how cute they are, but you are doing them a huge dis-service by not working with them now while they are young. If you wait until they are larger, this behavior will only get worse. Right now, it's a cute way to get your attention. Soon, they will grow more demanding and dominant.

Now, training is based on consistency. While you might be doing great following the above steps to keep your puppy from jumping on you and your family, you should also take a couple moments to ask your guests to act accordingly when they see your puppy. Let them know you're fine with them petting your puppy, but that you're in the middle of training them. Oftentimes, you will have to add the last sentence to reinforce that it's an active effort that requires their participation. Usually, just mentioning the puppy potentially jumping up on them will lead to an "Aww, I don't mind!" that can ruin all your training efforts.

The Ready Reckoner to Finding the "Right Person for the Right Job"

The Ready Reckoner to Finding the "Right Person for the Right Job"

By: Mahalakshmi Prabhakaran

Ever heard of the "round peg in the square hole" syndrome? It can essentially be used to describe a situation where you have hired the wrong person for the right job or vice versa.

Most companies generally hire employees based on their essential qualifications and experience. However it holds wise to remember that there are a multitude of factors that need to be kept in mind, while hiring a new incumbent. No matter how long it takes to find the perfect person for the job, it pays to wait for the right candidate to walk in than hurry and choose an ineffectual.

Sadly in spite of a growing awareness about these factors, a lot of companies still go wrong in the hiring process and end up placing the wrong person for the job. A wrong hire does not only add to the cost burden but also to the work and time burden of a company. As is often said, 'wrong hiring is worse than no hiring'.

This article seeks to provide you with answers to the essential question: Why do so many companies still make the same mistakes? Additionally giving you pointers on what you should remember during the interviewing process.

Look beyond qualifications and experience
Generally, when a job need has been identified, HR executives draw up a brief, detailing the job tasks and the relevant qualifications and experience needed from potential candidates. So while IQ and aptitude required for the job is listed, the EQ and attitude required for the job is given a see-through. The failure, to assess the inter-personal and intra-personal qualities needed of an individual for a job, is one of the more common reasons for hiring a mismatch.

Pointer#1
To avoid this mistake remember to list the qualities you think are required for a job profile. This makes for a scientific hiring process. One that will help you pick the right candidates from the wrong.

Prepare for the interview

An interview is by far the most accepted method to recruit new employees. Given its criticality many companies, in reality, rarely give a thought to planning the interview process. The fallout of an unplanned interview is that the right questions remain unasked, leaving you with a misfit in hand.

Pointer #2
Plan the interview. Determine the questions you want and a general guideline of the answers you expect for the same. As an interviewer, YOU need to guide the interview process. A well-thought interview process will effectively help you to evaluate a person's skills and determine if he/she is the right candidate for the job.

Follow the 80/20 rule

An adage that interviewers generally tend to forget is that "It pays to listen". More often than not, it's the interviewers who end up talking more than the interviewees!

Pointer #3
While interviewing follow the 80/20 principle: Listen 80% - Talk 20%. You need to learn as much about the candidate as you can, to best judge if the incumbent is the best fit for the job. At the same time, remember to allocate sufficient time to brief the candidate on the company and the basic job requirements.

We've listed some of the more common reasons for wrong hires.
What if you've already made a wrong decision? In such circumstances, just be patient and let the person grow into the job- have them groomed for the job by offering them the necessary training and letting them learn on the job. Else, you may want to examine the possibility of redirecting the candidate to a job more suited to his aptitude and skill set.

All said and done, the hiring process should be dealt with, with more care and thought. While this ready reckoner will make your job of interviewing easier, it definitely pays to hire a professional staffing company.

How to Use an Electric Bike for Weight Loss

How to Use an Electric Bike for Weight Loss
By Joan Bishop Denizot

It seems that with the rise of a progressive and industrialized nation, is a more sedentary life of its citizens. What with all the gadgets, machines, instruments, tools and equipment that science and technology has brought to mankind making their work easier. Then with this sedentary lifestyle comes health issues and the number one concern is obesity and its complications such as hypertension and diabetes.

However, the increasing awareness of the health risks of a sedentary life has convinced more people to get into a more active lifestyle such as an exercise program or routine to stay fit and healthy.

One of the best exercises is cycling. It is a low impact exercise that does not put too much strain on the joints and muscles. Riding a bicycle outdoors is an excellent cardiovascular workout that burns calories and lowers cholesterol levels, which helps prevent heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and other diseases. Cycling is also a good exercise to release stress.

However, there are those who would like to go cycling but could not do the rigid strenuous ride. Others do not have the confidence to ride a bike uphill or go for long rides because they fear they might tire easily and would not have the strength to go back. In such cases, the electric bike is highly recommended.

Most people think that an electric bike is a cheat to exercise because there is the motor engine to power the bike. Also, it is the common notion that one doesn't lose weight in riding an electric bike. In other words, an electric bike is not an exercise machine.

Contrary to popular belief, electric bikes can help a rider lose calories as effectively as a conventional bike. Although it is true that an hour on a regular bike burns more calories than an hour on an electric bike, the reality is that an average cyclist will not likely ride a regular bike as frequent as an electric bike.

Since the electric bike is easier to use than the conventional bike, it can be used frequently whether as a form of aerobic exercise or as a means of serious transportation. The key to burning the calories is to continue pedaling since the rider has to pedal the bike to keep the motor running. While using it as a transportation to work or to the grocery, the rider can turn off the motor and pedal the bike instead. The more you ride the bike and pedal it, the more calories you burn.

Whether you are an average sized rider or a heavier one who wanted to try biking for recreational purposes, commuting, or losing weight, check out Zize Bikes for a line-up of custom made, extra sturdy bicycles for everybody that can support ALL riders of ALL sizes (up to 550 pounds).

So whether you're aiming to shed some pounds or simply love soup, here are 3 creamy soups you'll definitely fall in love with:

Cheesy Corn and Potato Chowder

What you need:

  • 3 1/2 cups chicken broth

Type 2 Diabetes - A Medication for Rheumatoid Arthritis Improves Diabetes

Type 2 Diabetes - A Medication for Rheumatoid Arthritis Improves Diabetes
By Beverleigh H Piepers

Molecules involved in inflammation, such as interleukin-1 (IL-1), have been implicated in Type 2 diabetes. The implication has led researchers at the Universities of L'Aquila and Catanzaro in Italy to wonder whether existing medications that lower interleukin-1 might be useful for treating Type 2 diabetes. Their study, reported on in February of 2019 in the journal Medicine (Baltimore) looked at people who had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and who were being treated with anakinra, (Kinaret), a drug used to treat several inflammatory diseases.

The Type 2 diabetics treated with anakinra for their active rheumatoid arthritis were observed for six months and compared with others who were taking different anti-arthritis medications. At three months and six months, the people who were being treated with anakinra showed less insulin resistance and lower glucagon levels than those treated with other medicines. Insulin resistance causes Type 2 diabetes. Glucagon raises blood sugar levels by stimulating the liver to produce sugar.

For adults, the standard dose of anakinra is 100mg a day, injected under the skin of the abdomen or thigh. It reduces symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in four to six weeks and symptoms of other inflammatory diseases much faster...

  • redness, itching, rash, pain, bruising or bleeding can occur at the injection site, but the effects usually resolve after one or two weeks.
  • headaches and low white blood cell counts have been reported, but are unusual.

Sufferers need to be monitored with blood counts and watched for infections. More severe side effects include...

  • coughing,
  • wheezing,
  • chest pain,
  • rash,
  • hives,
  • breathing difficulty,
  • a swollen face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Anakinra is also used to treat several other inflammatory diseases...

  • juvenile idiopathic arthritis,
  • gout,
  • calcium pyrophosphate deposition (pseudogout),
  • Behcet's disease,
  • ankylosing spondylitis,
  • uveitis,
  • Still's disease, and
  • neonatal-onset multisystem inflammatory disease.

Interleukin-1 is not all bad. It is involved in immunity. It is part of the family of molecules known as the cytokines, which are concerned with inflammation and immune regulation.

The two types of interleukin-1s are designated...

  • alpha, and
  • beta.

They are created in macrophages, a kind of white blood cell, and various other cells. Interleukin-1 raises the body temperature to kill microscopic invaders and stimulates the production of interferon, an immune molecule, as well as several types of cells that help make up the immune system. It is given to fight melanoma, a variety of skin cancer, and kidney cancer.

We may have to learn to control the optimum amount of cytokines we need and to turn them on and off at will.

Although managing your disease can be very challenging, Type 2 diabetes is not a condition you must just live with. You can make simple changes to your daily routine and lower both your weight and your blood sugar levels. Hang in there, the longer you do it, the easier it gets.

For nearly 25 years Beverleigh Piepers has searched for and found a number of secrets to help you build a healthy body. Go to http://DrugFreeType2Diabetes.com to learn about some of those secrets.

The answer isn't in the endless volumes of available information but in yourself.

How To: Toilet Repair

How To: Toilet Repair
By Ray Yan

Hiring professional plumbers can be draining on the pocketbook. If you are in need of toilet repair services, consider taking on the repairs as a do-it-yourself project to save money and educate yourself on handy work around the home. While severe cases may require a professional, there are some basic repairs such as unclogging a toilet or repairing a running toilet that can be done in little time and with little effort. Follow online tips and step-by-step instructions, and be your own toilet repair provider for a fraction of the cost.

How to Fix a Running Toilet

If you have a standard or dual flush toilet, and are tired of hearing continuous running water, there are several simple solutions to fix this problem. Not only will you reduce the noise pollution throughout your home, you will also notice the savings on your water bill. The most common cause of a running toilet is when the guide rod attached to the tank stopper and chain is bent. If this is the case, simply straighten it and you may notice the reduction of noise immediately.

The next culprit to leaks is the floating ball underneath the tank. If you happen to lift this ball and the water running stops right away, bend the arm attached to this ball until the correct buoyancy is achieved without touching. If the ball is damaged, you may need to install a new one for a quick and simple solution.

There are several toilet repair projects that can be performed in a matter of minutes for free. Take on simple do-it-yourself projects and install anything from a standard replacement to a bidet toilet seat without spending unnecessary money. Not only will you save money, you will have a new found confidence in the work you have performed.

How to Unclog a Toilet

Perhaps the most common issue with toilets are clogs. While the first solution anyone would recommend is a plumber, there are some situations where a plunger just will not suction enough pressure to release the clogged item in the pipes. Knowing how to properly used a plunger prior to resulting to other alternatives is important. Rather than frantically plunging, you must be sure there is enough water in the bowl to fully submerge the plunger cup. If this is the case, apply petroleum jelly to the outside of the cup to provide a tight grip during the plunge. When inserting your plunger, make sure there is no air trapped in the interior for the best suction and pressure. Make 20 repetitious forceful plunges, and continue until the clog is gone.

If the clog is far too major for the use of a plunger or drain liquid compound, you may require more technical tools such as a toilet snake. Toilet snakes are long wires that are snaked through the drain to release the clog manually. These can come in electric form, or manual depending on your budget. Many home improvements stores rent these tools to do-it-yourself homeowners for a fee if you do not have the budget to invest in your own. If you do have to result to a toilet snake for a one piece toilet, be careful not to scratch the bowl during use.

How to Organize a Seminar or an Event

How to Organize a Seminar or an Event

By: Matt Bacak

Seminars and events have always been implemented as a holistic experience to participants. Thus, organizing an event requires extensive planning and preparation with most work implemented at least a few months before the actual event. Most of the time, seminars seem to run like clockwork with all events flowing smoothly according to schedule. In reality however, much groundwork has been worked on with the purpose of developing the right atmosphere in addition to a beneficial experience to partipants.

1. Establishing the theme of the event
Each event follows a theme and purpose which will drive the event set-up, the target audiences or the participants, the guests and the marketing approach. In general, a business event such as an international conference for a particular industry will appeal to participants conducting businesses within that industry as well as sponsors who gain mileage out of publicizing their products during the event.

Apart from that, the theme of the seminar will also determine the type of marketing channels to be used to for publicity. This also holds true for the seminar marketing team who will need the event theme to correctly identify target participants and companies to sell the event to.

2. Selecting a venue
Venue selection is highly dependent on the scale of the event. Usually this is determined by the number of participants, the presence of any guests of honor (such as royalty or politicians) the activities during the event, or if there are additional floor space required for exhibition purposes.

A typical seminar of about 100 - 200 can be comfortably implemented in a hotel seminar room, possibly in a theater style setting or classroom setting. However, larger scale events with participant numbers scaling be! tween 500 - 1000 may require a large hall, ballroom, auditorium or a convention center.

The location and quality standard of the venue is also important especially if the event involves the participation of VIPs. With this, a reputable location would be imperative, including good quality and wide range of seminar facilities available. It is always wise to explore the possibility of a few venues and examine their location suitability, level of services, ambience, and costs before coming to a decision.

3. Seminar Marketing and Publicity
Seminar marketing is by far the most critical and often most challenging task in event organizing, and is often regarded as the most critical factor of an event's success. This is because the number of participants turning up for a seminar is highly dependent on the strength of marketing activities and publicity. Whether or not the event achieves its objective or whether the organizers will walk home with a profit or loss largely depends on the marketability of the event. This means that the right marketing strategy and seminar positioning must be adopted in order to draw adequate event sign-ups.

Most of the time, event organizers who have large budgets will turn to above the line marketing such as newspaper and magazine advertisements as well as radio and television advertising to publicize the event. Press releases may also be sent in to major newspapers, in order to create the awareness of the upcoming event. Additionally, large advertising media banners and posters can also be purchased to advertise the event in high human traffic areas. When using print advertising, the specific magazine or newspaper used must have the target audience of your event as their primary readership base. Also all print media should be copy written with an enticing approach, highlighting the extensive benefits of participation.

However, if budget is a problem, then below the line marketing may also do wonders. If the event is industry specific, mass faxing to companies belonging to the industry would be feasible. Telemarketing is a very effective marketing channel to create awareness within the right participant group. Additionally, dispatching sales personnel to attend to the requirements of large participant groups is an ideal and effective strategy. Mass emailing has become one of the most cost-efficient methods to reach out to large target audiences. This would be really useful if the event organizer already have an existing database. Otherwise, a list of names can be rented from database companies to attain the same results.

4. Collaboration with sponsors
Getting reputable sponsors to participate in an event will help boost the creditability of the event, as well as reduce costs. Sponsors can also help with marketing, as they also help publicize your event to their customers. Apart from that, some of the sponsors can chip in on venue rental in exchange for exhibition space or publicity for themselves. Some sponsors also require a short message of their company to be given to the participants during the event. Others give away sample products or door gifts to participants.

5. Managing People and working with speakers
A seminar will not be successful without the people running it, as well as the speakers sharing their knowledge to the participants. Invite speakers who are of caliber and reputation to the event, and who will provide the participants with relevant information to their work, industry or business. Prepare the speakers beforehand and work with them on their Power point presentations as well as pre-inform them of the logistics processes, timing as well as the expected audience size. Check with them on any special requests, such as the requirement for an overhead projector or additional microphones to be used for question and answer sessions.

All events require a good team of people handling tasks on ushering, registration, customer service as well as handling financials. Familiarize the team with any required event protocol to eliminate the possibility of confusion or error. In order to ensure smooth implementation, each person should be familiar with their individual roles. This can be ensured through a preparation of a detailed schedule of events coupled with roles and responsibilities for each person. Ideally, a project manager should control the whole team and ensure that everyone is carrying out their duties efficiently. Apart from that, the project manager also has the delegated authority to deal with all parties such as the venue management as well as the sponsors and event exhibitors.

Microphones, projectors, audio and video systems must be all checked to be in excellent working order. Over at the office, have a packing list prepared and get all require items transferred to the actual venue at least a day before the event. Event staff should be dispatched to work on site preparations, including setting up booths, decorations and posters, the day before the event.

On the actual day, staff should be present at the venue at least 1 1/2 hours before commencement. They should report to their duty stations and must be ready to receive participants half an hour before they are scheduled to file in. Registrations must be made at the door to ensure authorized access. Name tags, door gifts and event schedules or booklets will be given out at this point and ushers will show participants to their seats in the event hall.

This is in order to receive pointers, ideas and advice for future improvements.
