People diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) often receive a mixture of two powerful medications - the drug obinutuzumab combined with the chemotherapy drug chlorambucil. Although this approved therapy has helped many CLL patients, the drugs are not effective for all patients.

Obesity should not be taken lightly. It is a serious condition which can cause or be associated with a myriad of health problems including chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, liver disease, cancer, arthritis and diabetes. For the purposes of this article, I'm going to focus on obesity's adverse effect on overall health and fitness.

People who suffer from obesity are in a constant state of inflammation. This is caused by the continuous synthesis and release of inflammatory cytokines. Cytokines serve a very important role in the body such as cellular communication. But some of these molecules cause inflammation.

Pro-inflammatory cytokines are often associated with sensations of pain, which some researchers believe is the result of cytokine stimulation of pain receptors¹.

Most fitness participants are familiar with delayed onset muscle soreness, but obese and overweight people have to contend with chronic pain that is caused by pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Thus, it's quite understandable that many of these folks shy away from exercise. The unfortunate downside is that people who don't take steps to increase their energy expenditure (and thereby burn fat energy) will continue to release inflammatory cytokines from their fat tissue thereby leading to a vicious cycle of chronic inflammation, pain and weight gain. 

Cytokines also have a direct effect on cardiovascular health.

Proinflammatory cytokines play a role in development of heart disease, as these protein molecules are known to trigger the progression of atherosclerosis².

Cardiovascular exercise is a useful means of staving off heart disease, but if a person is in too much pain to workout, how are they going to get into shape in the first place?

Now, I'm going to ask you something: wouldn't it be fantastic if chronic inflammation could be reduced naturally?

Bergomot Citrus Plant Naturally Reduces Inflammation

Interestingly, medical scientists have been hard at work seeking natural remedies for inflammation. Much research is being conducted on the anti-inflammatory properties of edible plants.

Researchers have discovered that a special type chemical derived from the bergamot citrus fruit can reduce inflammation. This compound is known as as bergamot polyphenolic fraction (BPF).

Taking a peek at a remarkable study published in PLoS ONE we can start to get a sense of what bergomot can do.

Italian scientists sought to understand bergamot's ability to reduce inflammation. Michele Navarra and colleagues from the University of Messina and the University of Salerno used human tissue cultures which were stimulated to release pro-inflammatory cytokines³. Then they treated the tissues with bergamot and discovered that the citrus plant was able to lower the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines³. Moreover, bergomot helped inhibit pro-inflammatory pathways³.

In a separate and unrelated study, University of Ferra scientists whom were investigating the use of medical plants for treatment of cystic fibrosis learned that bergomot was able to inhibit a cytokine involved in lung inflammation⁴. 

A published article in American Journal of Physiology - Endocrinology and Metabolism discusses a correlation between saturated fatty acids and inflammation⁵. Additionally, researchers published a report in Lipids in Health and Disease discussing a relationship between high levels of cholesterol, pro-inflammatory cytokines and heart disease⁶.

There is also a relationship between obesity and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFDLD) (refer to our sponsored article Exciting Anti-Aging Research: Bergamot Stimulated AMPK Release May Keep Your Body Healthy). People who suffer from NAFLD have high amounts of serum cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) and low amounts of high density lipoprotein (HDL)⁷.

By now you should be coming to appreciate the fact that obese people are at great risk for heart disease. The aforementioned studies further support a relationship between heart disease and obesity and pro-inflammation.

Millions of Americans are either overweight or obese. Whether the cause is attributed to genetics, medicinal side effects or inactive lifestyle, the health risks are very clear. Obesity increases the likelihood of diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

At risk individuals often suffer from a condition classified as metabolic syndrome (MS) which is in essence an umbrella term for a physical affliction with the following characteristics:

• high blood pressure
• central obesity
• elevated blood sugar
• high cholesterol
• inflammation 

Medical science is aware of the problem, much research is currently underway seeking means to reverse the effects of metabolic syndrome and thereby improve overall health.

In this article I'm going to discuss how bergamot polyphenolic fraction - a plant sterol from citrus fruit - which has been demonstrated to reduce bad cholesterol and increase glucose uptake in metabolic syndrome patients, may be useful in reducing diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk.

We know that bad cholesterol is a culprit in heart disease. Low density lipoproteins (LDL) have a tendency to clog the arteries which will eventually lead to arterial bursting and heart attacks.

But bad cholesterol is also harmful to the liver. Fat accumulation in this organ can lead to a very serious condition known as non-alcoholic steato hepatitis (NASH). NASH is characterized by fatty tissue buildup and inflammation which in and of themselves are quite bad, but over time can cause irreversible scarring and malfunction (cirrhosis).

The liver is responsible for detoxification, hormone production, glycogen storage and many other functions, loss of the organ will result in death.

A team of Italian researchers have been examining the effect plant sterols could have on NASH and metabolic syndrome. 

They selected patients with MS and NASH whom were then treated with bergamot polyphenolic fraction. The team noted that the lipid profile of these patients improved after 120 days of BPF treatment. The patients previously had dangerously high concentrations of bad cholesterol which was gradually replaced by high density lipoproteins (HDL) otherwise known as "good cholesterol".

The MS/NASH patients also exhibited improved liver cell function. Lead researcher Micaela Gliozzi reasoned that decreased inflammation and reduction in fat accumulation improved hepatocyte functionality.

The aforementioned improvements work together to reduce cardiometabolic disease risk in patients suffering from metabolic syndrome. Diabetes is intricately tied to metabolic syndrome; therefore, reversing effects of metabolic syndrome may also reduce the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes.
